November NROTC board results known?

DS staus changed this morning...to " Congratulations!" 4year Navy option scholarship to GA Tech - so excited to have something positive to report! Can't wait for him to get home from school and check his portal. Dying to go to the school and tell him!! But will hold back and let him have the pleasure of finding out for himself.

CONGRATS!!!!!! :thumb::thumb::thumb:

Nice! Congratulations. Hopefully a lot more to come. It's been a LONG time since November and with so little positive reporting overall to date.

NROTC at Ga Tech

Ga Tech was DS first choice for NROTC...now we continue to wait for word from USNA and USAFA. Wonderful to have plan B in place.

CONGRATULATIONS! So happy to hear it! Of course quickly went and checked my DS status....no change...I even called DODMERB and asked if NROTC had requested a DODMERB on him (that's how we first found out about AROTC before the online changed) but nothing else was added.....

Anyone else status change yet? Here's hoping for us all to change TODAY!:wow:

congrats, patentesq - was GA Tech his first choice?

AppealToHeaven, I was congratulating arewethereyet. My DS is still waiting along with the others.

I think there is something else in play here other than credentials, because DS has pretty strong credentials. My DS has 1570/1600 SATs and other ECs, etc. that were apparently strong enough for appointments to two SAs (not USNA, where he did not receive a nomination but still 3Q'd) and selection for 4yr Scholarships to AROTC and AFROTC. I hope everyone will excuse me for saying this, but I can't imagine that NROTC has only handed out scholarships to folks with SAT scores higher than 1570, when a perfect SAT score is 1600 (800 Critical Reading and 800 Math). Candidly, if DS's scores weren't near perfect, I would conclude that he's simply not good enough for NROTC.

I contacted the NROTC units on DS's list, and except for the mandatory state school, they are not full (and typically are NEVER full, because hardly anyone is ever admitted to the listed schools). Also, the NROTC person at state school expressed surprise that DS wasn't picked up yet and thought something else was in play, which prompted my comment here.

Here's what I think might be the things holding things up:

1. Except for the mandatory state school, there are very pricey private schools on DS's school choice list (COA $55,000/year). Was told from one cadre member that NROTC is trying to fill state schools first but I have no way of knowing this is true or not.

2. DS's major is Biology (Tier 2 Major), NOT Tier 1 Engineering! (are all the NROTC awards going to Tier 1 first???).

3. Schools on DS's school choice list do not do rolling admissions, so maybe NROTC wants to be sure DS is admitted to the school before assigning him to the unit. Schools on DS's list are total "crap shoot" in terms of admissions, and maybe NROTC recognizes this.

4. DS received a letter from USNA, stating that he was academically qualified, so perhaps this somehow has placed a "hold" on things (although I have been told repeatedly that USNA and NROTC don't "talk").

5. DS and I have totally, totally, totally underestimated how much more competitive NROTC is than AROTC and AFROTC.

I'm really thinking that 5 is the most likely factor. I must admit, this has certainly been an eye-opener for me.

What to others who are still waiting think? Are the "waiters" all Tier 2 majors? Are the "waiters" listing pricey, private schools? Are the "waiters" also USNA applicants with board-certified letters? Or am I just incredibly clueless?

The reason I am asking these questions is mainly to help out my DD (currently a freshman in HS), who told me the other day that she wants to fly fighter jets!!

Any thoughts?

Arewethereyet - I can imagine your excitement. We are waiting as well on both USNA and NROTC - without either of these options at present, plan c is not as attractive!

Since I am new to the process, I did not realize that most apply for all ROTC scholarships and service academies -- so many are offered multiple options -- it must take awhile to sift through right?

There are so many things that can trip you up in this process, so you should definitely apply to everything you can. For example, you may want SA #1 but don't get a nomination (thus, you'll get a TWE in the end). Also, you may have an unexpected DoDMERB issue, and SA#2 will deny your waiver but AFROTC will grant the waiver.

The unfortunate part is that you don't know at the time you apply where all these issues may surface. If you wait to pursue Plan B until after you have exhausted Plan A, then Plan B is no longer available.

If you do opt for Plan A in the end, you can rest assured that someone else will benefit from your decision to close the door to Plan B (which may actually be the other person's Plan A). The funds allocated to your declined Plan B do get handed out to someone else at the end of this process.

The only other piece of advice is that you should not close doors until you have to. For example, if you want to fly and are offered USNA and AFROTC and dislocate your shoulder after turning down AFROTC, you won't be able to seek a waiver from AFROTC if USNA decides that you are no longer medically qualified.

Also, be prepared for an incredibly stressful process.

Patentesq. My DS is still waiting for MO NROTC. He had 1400 combined SAT with an 800 in CR, plus weighted 4.0 plus Eagle Scout plus other ECs. The MO scholarships were decided back in Febuary! His schools are all SMCs plus University of Washington. Are they all full? I do know that the MO Rotc was incredibly competitive this year. In the 4th Marine Dist., for the Feb. boards there were 260 applicants and they reportly gave out only 40 scholarships -- roughly 15%! I am also told that they were cut back on the number of scholarships they could offer. Maybe the same for regular NROTC

Thanks, pennak!! It seems odd that NROTC would be so much, Much, MUCH more competitive than USNA this year (my DS received the "board certified" letter from USNA months ago). I'm very surprised your DS didn't get picked up yet!!!!!!

As for your "full" question, that has not been a limiting factor for my DS (because only one school on his list is full).

Fate works in mysterious ways!! Timing certainly is everything!

Indeed!! I am wondering if my DS's PFT is hurting him. It was "only" 241 with "only" 18 pullups, still a class one pft as it is above 225, but who knows? I was told on March 4 by a Board selecting officer that the MO scholarships would be "official" within couple of weeks. So, maybe any day now.

DoDMERB is down so maybe they are loading all of the information for the new guys? Thoughts?

I've read many times about the PFT. DS never took one and was never told to do so. Is this going to hurt his chances?
Did it list that on the application?

I'm thinking at this point he's not going to be selected.:frown:

I think PFT is only for Marine Option. Navy didn't require it. AT LEAST I HOPE NOT!!

The PFT is for Marine Option only. In my DS's case, it was conducted by the recruiting officer when he went for his officer interview.

That's odd. I thought the MO NROTC application was not complete until and unless the applicant took the PFT. Your RS should be able to tell you whether his application was submitted for Board Selection.

You mean he administered the PFT while conducting the interview??? Those Marines are truly tough characters!!
