Good afternoon! My daugher was recently accepted for June of 2011! We are anxiously awaiting all the paperwork for her to come thru the mail. I have been looking at airlines that go thru Colorodo Springs and we were wondering anyone knew if the cadets's flight is discounted.?
And do any family members also get a discount? I know it sounds silly...we are from NY and are wondering how many of us will be able to go ..thank you to anyone who might know!

We are so excited for Jacqueline's future!

The AF will pay for your daughter's ticket. They will send it to her. Unfortunately, family members do not get discounts. My son flew on American Airlines and I did not have a problem getting a ticket for his 2 brother, best friend and me on the same flight.

Congratulations Karen, to you and your daughter! We are keeping somewhat of a running list of new appointees and their corresponding state. Would you mind sharing your state? Thank you!

Airfare

While I think the Academy prefers to purchase your daughters ticket, another option is for you to book your airline tickets, including your daughters, and make sure she has a receipt for the ticket in her packet when she shows up on I-Day. My wife and I flew with our son on reservations I made with Southwest to Denver. He was later reimbursed for his ticket after turning in a receipt on I-Day. By the way, it may be cheaper to fly to Denver and drive the 60 or so miles to the Academy. (This isn't always the case, it pays to shop around!) Congratulations to your daughter!

Do you recommend flying in earlier to acclimate to the higher elevation?

Trust me, you won't acclimate that quickly. It will take a few weeks, in my opinion. I was there for 3 days, and at the end of the third day i was still feeling it. I jogged a little and it was a painful experience.

I wouldn't recommend it if the sole purpose is acclimatization. I'd even go further than john and say it takes several months before you are fully acclimatized. Feel free to come out early if you want to relax and spend some time in the area.

You'll acclimatize regardless

One to three days won't make a difference, it takes weeks to get accustomed to the altitude and months to fully acclimatize. However, bear in mind that the vast majority of incoming cadets presently live at or near sea level. As a result the physical aspect of BCT dials up in increments over the first couple weeks (the psychological aspect begins as soon as the bus door closes.) In the meantime, I recommend running and swimming. (No, there is no swimming during beast...well perhaps some IM swimming, but swimming develops lung capacity and you'll need all the capacity you can get!)

Thank you very much! That's exactly where I'm looking...southwest out of Buffalo! and driving to the academy! Can't wait!

we are flying out monday 6/20 out of buffalo via southwest into denver to do a little sightseeing before I day; returning on a late afternoon flight friday again soutwest out of denver. southwest had the best flight time on friday so we will be able to catch the ceremony from the chapel wall friday morning at 9 am. also at the time was cheaper. it is the car rental cost that surprised me.

We are flying into Denver on 21 Jun and departing 26 Jun. Thank you Southwest for direct flights!!

Anytime now as I received mine yesterday.

"does anyone know when we should receive the government issued ticket?"

My son received his last Friday.
