Some questions about Boy's State:
A. How do I get nominated (I thought people were already selected but today my school mentioned that anyone interested should see guidance)?

B. I have seen several posts that mention that going to Boy's State over NASS is not a bad thing at all. However, I have already paid for NASS; could I get a refund?

Boy's State is just another thing to add to your resume, at NASS, your detailer will write a report on you and add it to your admissions file. They are both really good things to do.

navy2016,
You can get nominated by your school counselor or you can contact you State Department American Legion, to see how you can do it through them. Below is the link. Boys State is very important, if you can you should do it, because it holds weight. Sometimes if there is a schedule conflict with Boys State and NASS, they may let you go to a neighboring state.

I attended Boy's state last year. It was an incredible experience I had a good time.

You have to be nominated by you school counselor I believe.

Your local Legion Post is another source. All work thru schools. Unfortunately, many guidance officers are either ignorant, negligent, or simply too overwhelmed to communicate the availability and/or process for consideration. Some places it's deemed a fine honor and valuable EC, while many others, slots go wanting. Some places, counselors are totally out of the loop. It's not too late in most states. Get on it.

Boys State is not just something to be "added to your resume". Kids should be interested in things not just to make themselves look good to colleges. It is a great experience that only few get chosen to do so please make sure you apply for the right reasons. DS had a great time and relizes that it was a honor to be chossen.

I say that because it in no way is a guarantee to an appointment, it just adds another EC to your resume which adds to your whole person score just as being class president would be another addition to your resume and WPS. I attended California Boy's State last year and it definitely is an experience full of mostly motivated people who want to be there (there is always the exception). Both are valuable experiences and both will add to your complete package.
