I have 20/50 vision in both eyes, so eyesight correction is not by any means required for me to get through a normal day, but it sure is nice to be able to see fine details.

During basic training (and freshman year for that matter) will I be allowed to wear my contacts or will they force me to use those ugly-arse glasses I see in all the Jack's Valley pictures?

Thanks!

ugly arse glasses only. birth control goggles for a reason. As a freshman you can have contacts.

Do you really have that much of a problem with seeing things? I have 20/50 and I don't need glasses here by any means.

lol! great ;)

I can see most things just fine, but when it comes down to trying to read a street sign in an unfamiliar town at dusk in the rain... I wouldnt think about it without the contacts. They're also nice when I'm flying... especially when things get a lil hazy like they always do on a hot and humid Illinois summer day.

Thanks for the answer!

wait, hold on...i can have contacts during my freshmen year, but i have to wear those really cool glasses during BCT only, right?

I did not. I have never worn glasses. My vision is on the edge, but I don't need them. Might after having to look at the comp screen to answer so many questions though. ;)

That being as it is, hornetguy, don't forget that you are one of the most valuable assetes this forum has! Being able to get a firsthand look into life at the academy is way cool... and I'm definetly thankful for it! :thumb:

Any time. ;) I also got a kick out of people from the forums last year when they saw me walking around during a couple days of BCT and they called me out. :) For some of them, having that smiling upperclassmen was a rare treat after their cadre!

i sure can't wait to be called "cadet (my last name)", lol. so, are the BCG only for jack's valley? or for all of BCT?

All of BCT. Especially important in Jack's because of the dust. The dust is absolutely awful. It made me sicker than a dog all of 2nd BCT.

sooo, does the academy make your glasses before you show up? meaning, without them issuing an optometric exam?

I'm not quite sure. I think you give them your prescription on I-day and they make them there.... In my opinion, and mine alone, unless your vision really affects you that much, don't worry about wearing glasses. Anytime you read, the book will be in front of your face, literally. No signs you need to read. Unless it keeps you from functioning normally, I strongly suggest not getting glasses. But, if you really think you need them, do so.

oh, sorry, i dont think i made myself clear. i have contacts right now and i need them. i plan to continue to wear contacts through my academic career, i just wanted to make sure that was okay with jump and soaring and everything.

yes, and if not, then you can just use glasses for any programs... are you sure you're only 20/50 if you need contacts?
