Sports scholarship for USMA application process help?

Hey all,
I recently filled out a questionnaire for NCAA clearinghouse and I am getting some emails from them regarding what i want to do as a sport (swimming) and etc.
Is this the first step towards applying for an athletic scholarship to USMA? Or are there other ways? What is the process like and when should i begin?

No. I havent quite gotten there yet. I am at the point where I have to set up a "phone call meeting" with my family and such (which i think is pointless). Should I just pay the fee and get started right away?

USMA is free to all American citizens with small in-processing costs that comes out of your cadet salary (yes, you actually get paid to go to West Point!). So I'm not sure why they would need athletic scholarships... but hey, what do I know.
 
There are no West Point scholarships - athletic or otherwise.
If you want to play a sport - contact the coach of that sport.
A list of the coaches numbers is in the Athletics section of the West Point web site.
 
I did speak to the athletic director and the swim coach for both USNA and USMA. for USNA, they said that my times were good but not good enough for Division 1. Will a couple exchanges from the coaches regarding my athletic ability be all for me to go to one of the Academy's with an athletic "scholarship"?

Also, i found out about NCAA clearinghouse from the Naval Academy application. I may have gotten the wrong idea.

While there are no "scholarships" to attend USMA, if the coach wants you and if you are a qualified candidate, getting in is smoother. Often the recruited athlete gets an LOA (letter of assurance), which when combined with a congressional nomination, equals an appointment to the academy. You need to fill out the online recruiting questionaire, and if he's interested in you, coach Wender will begin the process.

you will not get an athletic scholarship to the academies. period. they are free for eveyone, and as such fall under a special category with the NCAA. Email the coaches, fill out the recruiting questionaire. Dont worry about the NCAA clearinghouse. If you are accepted to an academy, there is no reason you would be deemed ineligible by the NCAA, so hold off on worrying about that.

the coaches will reply asking for your times, grades, etc. They may offer to help you with the application, or like mentioned above use some of their pull to get you an LOA, but you have to talk to them first! It is impossible to get recruited if they dont know you exist.

Dave,

The NCAA Clearinghouse is required for all student athletes who wish to participate in an NCAA sport. You will be required to pay the fee to register. What the Clearinghouse does is determine your Eligibility to participate. It requires that you meet certain academic standards including a min GPA and Standardized test score. If you are thinking about attending one of the SA's you will certainly meet the requirements. You should start the process your junior year of high school. Once you pay the fee, you will receive your number.
 
The NCAA Clearinghouse and scholarships are really two different things. While it is true that the service academies do not provide athletic scholarships (not necessary), in order to compete on any Div I team at West Point (swimming would be one of those), an athlete must be "cleared" by the NCAA Clearinghouse. West Point follows all NCAA rules in terms of athletics. The Clearinghouse is, to put it very simply, an unbiased place for all athletes to register so as to ensure that those going on to college have met the minimum requirements to play college sports (IE. that they actually graduated from high school). So, if you have any desire to compete in any NCAA sport at an academy you must be registered with the Clearinghouse. You don't have to be recruited, you can walk on, but you must still be registered with the Clearinghouse.
 
You can do the online portion and pay your fee, that will get you your NCAA number. Let your guidance counselor know you have registered, there are things she must do and submit at a later date for you to actually receive your clearance from NCAA. But the number you receive the day you pay the online fee is all you will need for now to fill out college recruitment forms.
