Hey guys,

As some of you may know, I was selected for the 4 Year NROTC Marine Option Scholarship to UNC, but I didn't get in to UNC. I went into an absolute frenzy trying to figure out what to do. I posted my problem here and got some amazing advice via PM from some members. I followed the advice and worked my tail off trying to get this scholarship to work. I requested a transfer to the University of Houston due to some advice they had an open slot. I didn't even apply there yet when I asked to have the scholarship moved. I applied there and finished the application in three hours. Transcrips and everything. I got the e-mail from NROTC today saying that my scholarship was put off the waitlist to the University of Houston and that they would like to know if I wanted to accept it. I told them YES!!! But I didn't know if I got into Houston yet, so I ran into a room safe from teachers (I was in school) and called the admissions office at Houston. I asked them if I got all my stuff in and when I would know. The lady then told me I just got accepted yesterday. So finnaly I will be able to put my scholarship to good use! I owe a lot of it to the tips that were given to me via this forum and to my loved ones who knew I could do it. It has been an extremely crazy couple of weeks and an insane senior year, but I got it!!!! So thank you all once again! And to the people that are still in limbo with getting there scholarships to work, keep faith!!!!

Congrats that is great news.

Does U of H have wrestling program...assume you wrestle by your name.

Congratulations!! My son is in the same boat! How did it take to work it all out?

Confused

Congrats StateChamp!!! WAY TO GO!!!

After reading these posts regarding the MO option scholarship is it safe to assume one could do the same for a regular 4yr NROTC Tier 1 scholarship? We are STILL waiting to hear from University where scholarship was originally placed! We have called and emailed admissions but they just say he'll hear by the end of April which does us absolutely no good!
DS has name on waitlist for 2 schools he has been accepted to. So, do we wait to hear from the transfer folks? How does one find out if a host school even has openings in their unit? aaarrrggg

We are feeling even more frenzied now that USNA did not work out and like many of you we do not want this amazing opportunity for NROTC to slip through our fingers! HELP! Thank you so much!

The answer my DS was told was to contact Pensacola, because they are apparently the only ones with a list of available openings nationwide. You may want to drop an application to a school where there IS an opening, just as a backup in case the other school doesn't work out. The folks at NROTC Pensacola can likely give you advice on this score. Also, get your DS on every NROTC waiting list at the schools where he has been accepted AND waitlisted, because those will open up as NROTC scholarships are declined, etc.

April appears to be a nightmare month for NROTC awardees. Ugh!

I think you can only be put on three NROTC unit wait lists, according to Ms. Parker in Pensacola. If you were not accepted to your first choice college, be sure to notify her and get on three wait lists ASAP. Hopefully the NROTC units are also notifying Pensacola about any assigned applicants were not accepted by their colleges, and, hopefully, Pensacola is in turn proactively contacting all of the NROTC units to get this information right now. This needs to be done quickly so that our kids on wait lists can start being re-assigned. Most kids have to pay enrollment fees by May.

With the competition for college these days, my guess would be that up to 1/3 of the scholarship recipients may not have gotten into their first-choice schools. But, they could not predict their futures last summer/fall when they were applying for college and prioritizing their NROTC unit requests on their applications.

Congratulations to you StateChamp145. Remember this experience the next time someone says NO to you. There is always a way over the wall.

lroddy: Agree with above posts. Call Ms. Parker (P-Flying17) to discuss your current the wait list options. She will know which schools have no wait list, which have short wait lists, and which have wait lists so long it is not practical to be added to the end of it. Suggest you add a school #3 to which you apply now ... one where there is no wait list, and where you may apply last minute. Ms. Parker can clue you in to which schools are friendly to NROTC scholarship awardees applying long after the school's normal deadline for freshman applications. Remember that schools are quite appreciate of FULL TUITION students, which is the case when Uncle Sam foots the bill for an NROTC scholarship student. Also remember that State supported schools often have some sort of mandate, whether written or implied, to support other govenment projects... and DOD/ROTC is one very important government project!

Thanks!

Thanks everyone..good advise all around. I will call Monday morning, on behalf of DS since he leaves for school at 0645. I believe Ms. Parker starts awarding transfers "the first part of April".
Keeping fingers crossed for one and all!

I notice alot of parents stress about enrollment fees. If you are on the waitlist for a school, call the school's admission office and ask for an extension on paying. Let them know you really want to attend the school, but are waiting to see if you are able to get your scholarship transferred to the requested unit. Most schools will allow an extension.

Navy and Nurse options are not worked until last board has been placed. Looking like end of April, possibly beginning of May.

In the end, if you truly want to use your scholarship, you can, it just may not be to a school you originally request.

You also have to accept your scholarship prior to requesting a transfer or waitlist placement.

P-Flying 17: Thanks for the good advice on requesting extensions. I am not sure that we would have thought to do that.

P-Flying17, I am a little bit concerned that the last board meets in the beginning of May. A lot of colleges require that we commit by May 1st. I am afraid that if I am awarded a NROTC scholarship it will not be to the school that I commit to.

Another concern is what if you are awarded a scholarship, but every single school on your list is filled up? If you are notified by May it would be far too late to apply to a school with open slots.

Where did you hear that the last board meets in May? I put in for a transfer and they said that they would begin working transfers in early April.

P-Flying17 just said that the last board will likely meet at the end of April, maybe even early May.

That's interesting because I was selected for a scholarship, didn't get into my first choice school, put in for a transfer and I asked Pensacola when they will be working transfer and they said early April, I assumed anytime now I should know.

We were initially told early April as well for transfers and waitlists to be worked. Now the word is May. NROTC must have added another selection board in April that perhaps was not originally planned?

I would think that all of the existing kids who have received scholarships should be moved out of colleges where they were not accepted and wait lists should be worked before adding more kids to the pile at this point. It is too late to apply to most colleges. Why not reward those who applied early for NROTC and for college by getting their placements finalized in April? Most of the kids in this transfer/wait list boat probably have good records, and their only fault was reaching a little too high in their first-choice college. Adults always tell kids to aim high and reach for the stars. Hopefully the kids who did this won't feel like they made a mistake.

I believe you are mistaken when you say they should reward those who applied early. I finished my application back in September. I have not heard a word yet I'm still in the running.

I sincerely hope you get the scholarship after this long wait! My child applied in July, after a smart and helpful recruiter encouraged him to get it in as early as possible.

I wish the best to you and my son and all of the kids who are wanting so eagerly to serve their country.

Thanks for your encouragement! I just got denied by USNA so I could really use an NROTC scholarship to boost my spirits. Even if that doesn't materialize, I'll be doing NROTC as a college programmer. My goal is a commission and that's exactly what I'm going for.

I did not say the last board was in May. I was saying waitlists would not be worked until after the last board is placed. Then it takes a few days to go through the numbers to find out what schools are open and have availability to start making offers to those on the waitlist.

I thought it would be early April as well, but now have different information. Marine waitlists are already being worked.
