I know that the cadets in the 2015 class will not be able to receive email until probably late in August, but I found the following and would appreciate it if someone could confirm the validity of this information? Thanks.
What is my cadets email address?

The email address for cadets attending USAFA is:

letter "c" for class; 2-digit graduation year; firstname.lastname@usafa.edu. Remember there is a period between firstname & lastname.

Example: Cadet John Smith will graduate in 2011, so his email address is: c11john.smith@usafa.edu

Yep, that looks about right. They should actually have their e-mail set up by the time they're issued their computers during the last week of 2nd BCT (if I'm remembering when they got 'em correctly). That said, the advice we got was that they should probably have a 'personal' e-mail account (gmail, hotmail, etc) for outside communication and leave the usafa.edu strictly for offical communications as there will be lots of it.

Technically; yes. But I wouldn't "Guarantee" that. Why? Common last names may require a variation of the address. e.g. c15john.smith2@usafa.edu. Or; the academy may choose john vs jonathan vs johnny vs etc.. or Dave vs David vs Davey etc... depending on the individual and what they may prefer or are called by.

So while YES, technically the email format is correct; I wouldn't be making up stationary, business cards, or passing that email address out until your son/daughter contacts you the Monday after BCT is over. Remember; after BCT is over; Saturday; they will move into their real room and start getting their computers, books, etc... This are teenagers. The VERY FIRST THING THEY DO upon getting their computers, is EMAILING THE WORLD!!! They will email you immediately. As well as facebook and all other things. Wait until they contact you. They'll have all this in place a couple days BEFORE "A-Day".

But if you've got a not so common first name, and a not so common last name, then your format description is correct. If you've got names like bob/bobby/robert; jobn/jonathan/johnny/; bill/william/billy; Jones/Smith/Sanchez/ etc... I wouldn't make any assumptions until they emailed you.

Thanks a million and I appreciate the quick response and suggestions!:thumb:

The only thing to add is that if your cadet has an unusually long first name or last name, it will be truncated for the email address. I am not sure on the limit for characters.

I would definitely have them set up a personal email account through one of the free mail account providers. Our son was adamant that no personal email be sent to his official AF account.

Forgot all about that. Excellent point.

The cadets LIVE on email. That's where they get their schedules; daily announcements; squadron info; etc... Don't use this email for personal correspondence. (Plus, the email stays on the academy's SERVERS). I'm a techno-geek. Why the hell I didn't mention this. DOH!!!! My son's been there 3 years. We've NEVER emailed him ANYTHING to the usafa.edu email account. It's always to his gmail or yahoo account. GREAT CATCH STEALTH!!!

I appreciate the kind words; but the "BEST" part of this forum, is that it's a compilation of EVERYONE'S posts.
When you combine the questions of some;
with the responses of current cadets;
and opinions of applicants;
with the experiences of retired military;
and the emotions of parents;
with the advice of ALO's;
and the guidance of alumni;

You get one HELL of a forum with an excellent knowledge base for all those interested in the air force academy. That's why this forum is the BEST when it comes to those interested in the academy(ies). Other forums don't promote or encourage comments like this one. While I appreciate your compliments; my comments/opinions only have significance and accuracy because of the comments by you, hornet, Stealth, pima, BSA, bullet, aglages, and every single other poster on this forum. Later... mike.....

Thanks to this thread my son was stalked via cadet email. This should not be on the web.
Parents you need to understand what OPSEC is.

You tracked down the stalker back to this forum how exactly? Many on this forum, and I use that term literally are veterans, retired or active duty military. I'm fairly confident that they wrote the books on OPSEC. In today's world, email addresses regardless of the source are sold and traded daily.

It's called an FBI investigation

Furthermore this thread is from 2011. It needs to come down. There is a reason we don't publicize this information.

You are an idiot if you think this is a joke.
Idiot I may be but I'm not to the point of being a consperisy theorist. "World ends today......film at 11. You sure your son or daughter didn't compromise the email addy btw? Have a Great Day clearblueskies!!

The OPM data breach a couple or few years back probably had more to do with any cadet being stalked via their official email than anything posted in this forum.

Email is not OPSEC. Government emails and phone numbers can be obtained via FOIA requests. The general structure of an email is also not OPSEC and cadets and midshipmen aren’t at the pinnacle of operations.

Good Morning,

Thank you for bringing your concerns to our attention. It does not appear that there is an OPSEC issue associated with posting the format of Air Force Academy e-mail addresses. Please note that the main Air Force e-mail format is published at af.mil (see http://www.af.mil/News/Article-Display/Article/127496/air-force-launches-e-mail-for-life-initiative/). Regarding the allegation of stalking, such information should be reported to the relevant law enforcement entity(ies).
