Out of curiosity, how many here are Eagle Scouts and, to be fair, Gold Award receipients (Girl Scouts)?

DS is an Eagle and has his Palm award... when he went for his Navy rotc interview the guy who interviewed him had no idea what a Palm award was.... HUMMM hire then and Eagle and didn't know...not a good sign.

DS Eagle-double Gold palm --Vigil honor OA. Still didn't help a plebe get Philmont block.

DS (plebe) is Eagle Scout. One of his roommates is also an Eagle Scout. His roommate did get Philmont block for this summer. (They were told that it was unusual for plebes to get Philmont block.) DS is hoping to do it next summer. Should be a lot cheaper then the Alaska NOLS block he is doing this summer

Philmont is hard to get regardless of year but especially for plebes. I tried last year and the year before and it's gotten increasingly tougher each time as word has passes about how good of a deal it is. The first time I made it to interviews and was on the "wait list" kind of, but last year didn't get nearly as far (and I had more experience, was a rising 2/C, etc.)

NOLS is an awesome experience and hands down the best leadership training I've gotten associated with USNA. Good luck to your son! Is he doing mountaineering or sea kayaking?

I have read several times on this forum and elsewhere that appx. 1/3 of SA appointees are Eagle Scouts. I have no idea if this is valid info, but if not, at least the rumor is consistent with respect to the percentage.

Will it help chances if you are a NESA member and join the USNA chapter on campus?

I know DS and his roommate are both members and joined the USNA chapter. I know that they were getting emails about the application process from them. DS said his roommate had a great interview and had the interviewers laughing. So who knows. Blackhawk mom, why don't you have your DS talk to my DS and his roomie.

Hurricane12, DS is going to be doing the Alaska mountaineering. Which NOLS trip did you do? I'm glad to hear you enjoyed NOLS. Congratulations on being a rising 1/C! (I know you guys have a few more weeks of this year left but it is going by fast!)

I did Yukon whitewater canoeing up in Canada. A lot of my friends did Alaska mountaineering and said it was amazing. He'll be challenged physically and mentally, but have a great time.

(It's not going by fast enough.)

DS earned his Eagle in 2004 and 4 palms., OA ..member of USNA NESA chapter
never got to Philmont during his scouting years but enjoyed NOLS -Alaska last Summer immensely:thumb:

DS is Eagle, 6/10/10, 1 palm. Next week is a year since his project and he's waiting for results of March AROTC board - or SMP Ohio Guard if no offer.

OA, NESA and made it to Boundary Waters and Outer Banks NC, no Philmont either

I am currently working on my Gold Award; I will have my project completed by June. How much will earning it help me get accepted to the Service Academies and/or receive an ROTC scholarship?

Boundary Waters was legit. Other than backpacking from Ocracoke to Kill Devil Hills, that's the only 'high adventure' I was able to do. What'd your son think?

I'm assumming that you're a junior in high school, correct?

If you manage to get everything squared away before application season, it will help set you apart. Case in point: In my ROTC interview, I told the Norwich Army ROO that I was an Eagle candidate (Waiting on the Board of Review), and he looked like he had been prodded with an electric cattle prod!

But seriously, it will help out a lot. Not many people can say that they are a Gold Award receipient or an Eagle Scout. Doesn't help using the Common App (No spot for it yet), but if you're going for an SA, use their own application.
