Does anyone know how competitive congressional districts in San Diego are for nominations to USMA?? I know they're VERY competitive for USNA because it is a LAAAAAAARGE Navy town, but hardly anyone knows about the Army in San Diego so I was just wondering.

Umm California in general is one of the most competitive states for USMA. I dont know the specifics but I know that this is true.
 
doesn't it work by congressional district though? (as opposed to working state-by-state)
 
Yes. I mean you could be in a district that is an exception for California with low USMA applications and competition. I know when I went to West Point someone asked me what I had done and I gave them a list and they said dont worry you will definitely get in because they knew a guy who only had like one varsity letter, pretty much no extra curriculars, and below average academics, but he got in because he came from like north dakota or somewhere like that. Where I live in Raleigh NC, most people who get the appointments have average grades, solid EC's and average scores. Take a stroll down a few counties and the competition gets much fiercer because of Fort Bragg. Its kinda jumbled but do you kinda understand what I am getting at?
 
I totally do. I think I have a similar story. Two seniors on my wrestling team recently both got appointments to USMA and USNA, respectively.

USMA appointee:
-Received an LOA
-2020 SAT
-14/390 class rank
-club president
-NHS
-1 Varsity wrestling letter (no captaincies)

USNA appointee:
-No LOA
-2230 SAT
-5/390
-multiple club president
-Scouting senior patrol leader (not eagle though)
-NHS
-3 Varsity wrestling Letters (2 captaincies)


From that I kind of gather that West Point is a little easier from where I'm from but then again it's just two people.

By the way, anyone knows how competitive is Massachusetts (for USMA)? Most specifically, district 08? And the general Senator Nominations?
 
That's probably the highlights, but I don't recall him having much more than that. The real kicker is: he just barely passed the CFA and had to get a medical waiver too!

How did get manage to get an LOA? did he finish his file early?
 
yep, he went to NASS and I think he finished his file way early
 
california is very competitive I agree, but some districts aren't really all that tough. Im choosing to apply from district 33 instead of district 30. Im really going for a principal nom. My local guy said that there were 8 candidates, not all 3QQQ going for 10 nomination slots in district 30. This is because West LA isnt really all that big on the military, especially the army. I asked on of the guys that looks over all of cali and he says competition in 33 is easier.

Ive got loads of sports, letters, captancies, organizations, and internships and all that stuff but my academics are below USMA 2016's. My SATs are above the 2014 average and my class rank is top 30 percent at a very competitive school.

So, some districts are not competitive.
