just decided to check my dodmerb account after being accepted to the academy to check if i am infact pilot qualified and saw these "problems"(?).

distant visual acuity not correctable 20/20(comq)
Failure of the red lens test (i know for a fact this test was done incorrectly but i never went for a retake of it)
and Substandard depth perception

first what does visual acuity not correctable 20/20 mean and second are any of these disqualifications for becoming a pilot.

What is substandard depth perception? I remember the test an I'm pretty sure the first 5 were easy and the othe 5 were rather tricky

i dont know that's what i am trying to find out i know what depth perception is so i'm guessing i am unable to judge how far away something is? I am just wondering if these make me unable to be a pilot.

I may be wrong, but here's what I've gathered from other threads.

-DoDMERB's PQ "status" is just a guess. It's not official, so I wouldn't lose sleep. If you get to the Academy and whenever you make it official that you'd like to be considered for UPT, the Academy will test you. Apparently I'm 1/2 inch too short (sitting) to be a pilot, so my thoughts are 1) see below for my sketchy tests, and 2) if it is true and I still want to go to UPT in a few years/I'm qualified everywhere else, I think you can go in front of a board to try to get waived.
- In my personal experience, my review was done at three different, equally sketchy places. I basically went to an Urgent Care for my regular physical, and for sight... I don't even know what that place was. I'm sure the Academy realizes that DoDMERB had us all tested just as a preliminary to make sure we were fit to serve our country in a general sense, and that our reviews were done at (at least in my case), the cheapest and most efficient sites possible.

So again, don't quote me on any of this, but I think this is how it works. Long story short, we got into the Academy and are going to serve our country as commissioned officers in the Air Force; being PQ is secondary

Visual accuity not correctable means that you cannot see 20/20 even with glasses. This is a definite pilot disqualifier. This is not waiverable. You may want to make sure that this is indeed the case.

Jetset, my niece had the same problem with her sitting height, and she is now a C-130 pilot, so hang in there! (and make sure you tighten those glutes next time you're measured) :thumb:

Generally speaking the Academy will try and get a waiver for something that is waiverable. However, if you need more than one waiver it probably won't happen.

i'm going to get on the phone with dodmerb just to find out what all of these mean and schedule a retake if necessary but i've never worn glasses at all my entire life and don't really believe that i have too much trouble seeing. And if my vision was not perfect shouldn't it be able to be corrected with glasses/contacts etc. anyway? I don't get what the non correctable part means... i have never even been told i need my vision corrected let alone tried correcting it.

A flying Class I exam that actually determines if you can go to pilot training, is NOT conducted until a cadet is IN USAFA. All applicants for pilto training (after USAFA graduation) must be correctable to 20/20:thumb:
