Will Cadets still attend classes? Will there be food service at Mitches?

Confused

Are you implying that USAFA will no longer be in existence? or what is meant by 'USAFA potential government shutdown'??

Sorry for not being clear. What will happen at USAFA if the federal govenment shutdown due to funding bill not being passes.

hahahah bet you will not find a cadet not doing his homework tonight because of a potential funding problem. Bet you don't find a soldier laying down his weapon because of a funding problem. My opinion, but the only way I know how to answer such a question at this time.

If the budget for the 2011 fiscal year is not passed, all non-essential services will be shutdown. The armed forces are considered "essential", and the AFA falls under the armed forces. I am pretty sure things will go on as scheduled.

Thank you

Just to add a bit of insight: There already was a government shutdown of 1995-1996. Ever hear anything about a 'USAFA shutdown'? ;)

in case of a shutdown

All civilian employees (at least teachers as far as I know) will be forced to take non-paid leave. Classes will still go as scheduled, there just may not be teachers present for some of them.

^^ That's what it sounds like, so far. Military instructors will pick up classes taught by civilians and things should proceed as normal (for the most part). Mitch's will still serve food. :)

We discussed this in two of my classes today. Each department set up a contingency plan for if all the civilians could not come to work, it just means a lot more work for all the military teachers. Someone also said they were pulling people from other parts of the base to staff mitch's without civilians, but I am not sure how well that would work...

I had heard that food service civilians are "excepted" personnel, so they will still have to report for work.

The Chow Hall workers are contracted. Their funding is set aside on a yearly basis. They will all still work. All contractors will still work. Only the GS level civilians will not be working.

Would the civilian teachers be forced to temporarily leave? I feel like some teachers would feel an obligation to still go teach their class even without pay. Then again, I'm an optimist.

High Schoolers still have to go to public school, including their teachers :frown:

per law, furloughed employees are not allowed to work, even voluntarily. It is against the law. So no, civilian teachers will not be teaching classes.

To clarify a few other things, military personnel are all required to go to work, but they will not recieve pay until an agreement is reached. At such a time, military will recieve backpay for those times. furloughed employees on the other hand will not recieve any pay during that time.

As for scraper's comment, i would bet many cadets don't do hw tonight with using the shutdown as an excuse, just because cadets use any excuse they can to put things off (plus, its Friday, and we gunna have a ball tonight).

Now each part of the government approaches it different. Here at AFIT (Air Force Institute of Technology) all of our classes will be cancelled until civilians return.

During the last shutdowns, furloughed employees did receive back pay for the time that they were not working. However, that depends on the legislation that will have to pass to address this issue, so it's not a definite thing.

sorry, i phrased that wrong. you are correct, and what i should have said is they "may" not recieve any pay during that time. thanks for pointing that out.

Curious... if this is a repeat of 95/96 and lasts close to a month, what will happen for you re:graduation.

From what I recall many of you have a UPT follow on. if the graduation date is backed up by a few weeks, will there be an issue of timing? Bullet actually had a tight timing issue. UNT. LIFT, Water Survival, SERES, RTU. There wasn't more than 10-14 days at the most, some were as close as 3 days.

Also, I would assume as an AFIT candidate the majority are living off base, that means if you only are going to get 1/2 of your paycheck, you will be short fiscally. Let's be honest 2nd LTs don't make millions.

All I am hearing on the news is this:

DEMS: Planned Parenthood
REPUBS: Military

Both are being used as pawns by the elected MOCS.

I was speaking of last night my post was yesterday and I know my son was doing HW til 2200 last night and had a lot of russian and in addition stayed late today because his group won't take responsibilitly for stuff they need to get done so he took it upon himself to get it done because that subject is also one of his best grades.
He will lose 2 teachers bercause of the funding and I know 1 cadet will lose 5 out of 6. As far as tonight your right its friday.

they had things set up for anyone across the base who beleived they would hit monetary struggles if the shutdown had occured. with our pay there's really no reason, but if the case did exist that you lived paycheck to paycheck to pay rent and utilities, cadet loan, car loan, and other needs, they made it work. As for missing classes, they were going to announce plans. Basically they would schedule makeup classes like snowdays. We have anywhere from 10 days to 2.5 weeks off between quarters, so in the long run we basically would just lose our break and push from one quarter to the next if it had occured and lasted for several weeks. As for follow ons, we have a couple months before IFS and then some more time before UPT starts, so even if it had spilled over we have plenty of time. Most guys im with here graduate march 2012, IFS in may, and our actual start date isn't until july 2012.

and my fault on missing the date. but then again, thirsty thursday and no-hw thursday are also common, and the fact that any hw due friday was given in class Wed also gives time to have worked on it. Not saying its right, just saying cadets are pros when it comes to procrastination.
