DS is currently involved in high school sports and his strength coach has recommended the use of a supplement: CREATINE. I've done some research and it appears that if used properly the risks are minimal. My question is: Does the CGA prohibit the use of Creatine or other dietary supplements?

My best guess is yes it's prohibited.

There is no way creatine is prohibited. All creatine does is force more water into the muscles to help you bulk up. Make sure your son does know that he will need to be drinking 1+ gallons of water everyday while he is taking it. However, if it were me, I would take just a pure whey protein. It will build leaner muscle than a creatine will. Just my two cents, unless he is a recruited athlete then I would stick with what the coach said.

Straight from Cadet Regs

4-5-06. Narcotics and Controlled Substances.
a. The Uniform Code of Military Justice, Article 112a, provides the guidance
for this section. Any cadet subject to these regulations who wrongfully uses,
possesses, manufactures, distributes, imports into the customs territory of the
United States, exports from the United States, or introduces into an
installation, vessel, vehicle, or aircraft used by or under the control of the
armed forces a substance described below will normally be punished as a
court-martial may direct. The substances referred to above include the
following:
1. Opium, heroin, cocaine, amphetamine, lysergic acid diethylamide,
methamphetamine, phencyclidine, barbituric acid, and marijuana, and any
compound or derivative of any such substance.
2. Any substance not specified in (1) that is listed on a schedule of
controlled substances prescribed by the President.
3. Any other substance not specified in (1) or contained on a list prescribed
by (2) that is listed in Schedules I though V of section 202 of the
Controlled Substances Act (21 U. S. C. 812).
4. Anabolic steroids, testosterone, and other NCAA-prohibited "body building"
substances are included.

5. Any mind altering or designer drugs such as MDMA (ecstasy), GHB,
Ketamine, and Rohypnol.
6. The improper use of legal hallucinogens such as glue, paint, and salvia
divinorum.
b. Cadets are expressly forbidden to possess any drug paraphernalia. Clubs that
cater to, or encourage, illegal drug use must not be patronized by cadets. A
specific list of off limits clubs and bars is published quarterly by the local
Armed Forces Disciplinary Control Board. The list of off limits clubs will be
distributed and posted by the Regimental Executive Officer.
c. A cadet using or possessing narcotics or controlled substances will be
disenrolled or summarily dismissed from the Academy, normally with a
General Discharge.

As long as it is allowed by the NCAA...meaning yes.

I got all this information from http://www.ncaa.org/wps/wcm/connect/public/NCAA/Student-Athlete+Experience/NCAA+banned+drugs+list

Your body produces creatine on its own in the kidney, liver, and pancreas. It is also in a lot of food that you eat. There is no way that it is illegal. Most meats like, especially fish like tuna and salmon, have higher amounts than other foods. So unless the NCAA wants to ban meat from cafeterias nation-wide, then creatine is legal.

Your body also produces hormones...which can be banned.....

Think what you like, but if you do your research you would know that it not banned by the NCAA. Besides if the DS in question is not a NCAA student athlete then they shouldn't have to even worry about getting drug tested for things like creatine. They will be looking for illegal drugs int that search.

I don't need to "think what I'd like", there is a little more to the federal and cadet regs than "whatever NCAA says."

You may very well be correct, however my advice is, and has been, call and get an official answer. Substances of any kind shouldn't be "played with". They may come back and say "sure, do it all the time"...or they may say no...who knows? THEY DO!

Use of Creatine at the CGA

I would like to thank everyone who responded to this thread. Your thoughful insight and the information from the NCAA and the USCG was very helpful. I have contacted the academy via e-mail and we are waiting a reply. If appropriate I will post the information I recieve.
