Light Table

DS is out on second sea year and has decided a light table would be beneficial. Where can he find an inexpensive version to get him through the next few months?

A good project for him would be to make one. I bet I could find all the parts I need in any engine room.

If I ever end up using one, I sure suppose a factory-made table will have a better quality... but making a table like that should be fun, seriously speaking.

Thanks for the great link. DS made a table during first sea year, but it seems that not all shipping companies allow the materials for such purposes to leave the engine room. I remember seeing info about tables on this forum in previous years. DS will find a way if it is important to the mission.
 
I've seen deckies, use the glass covered chronometer box as a light table. So that's an alternative provided their ship has a chronometer box. Many newer ships don't have have them, but almost all the older ones do.
 
We got one for our DS at Michael's Crafts store. I think it was around $20.
 
We got a very good one from Walmart for about $20. DS said it was worth every penny. Lent it to several mids coming home from sea year with unfinished projects. Made the drawing go much quicker.
 
God forbid they should actually have to draw out the system schematics. . .
 
Dd has asked us to provide a light table when she gets back from this, her second sea year. She will have done all of the drawings, but she has discovered that with the rolling of the ship, they're not as neat as she would like. We've been warned that she will need to redo them on stable, dry land and wants a light table. Of course, she assured us that if we don't want to get her a light table, she can easily put one together from simple materials like a picture frame and a lamp with a fluorescent bulb. Spoken like a true engineer. I suspect that she would feel insulted if I tried to provide her with instructions.:shake:

Exactly. Now, I never found the need for one during my sea year. I can say that one can be made very simply, and with materials handy in any engine room. I would doubt if any of the engineers would mind if the materials would be taken to the cabin, either. Of course it doesn't need to be permanent, either. Often times, when I made or did something that was usefull for my sea project, I would leave it in the Cadet's cabin for the next one. . . .
