Hello everyone,

I am a newbie, so hope this is the right place to do this. My daughter wants to contract with the ROTC but a hole in her eardrum makes her ineligible. She will be having Tympanoplasty surgery at the end of the month to repair her eardrum but is wondering if the army has a set wait period after the surgery before they consider the condition corrected.
She also had asthma as a very small child. I know that asthma is a reason for rejection but since she no longer has it, is this still a reason for rejection.

Thanks so much(in advance) for any help offered. I was so happy to find this website.

You might want to post this question on the DoDMERB site on the forums. Larry Mullen is THE man regarding all things DoDMERB. He will answer your questions quickly and correctly. :thumb:

Medical Standards - Asthma/Ear Drum

You should contact DODMERB. In the meantime, I am not offering myself as an authority, but here goes.

1) Regarding the ear drum correction, the Army's Standards of Medical Fitness indicate that correction of a typanic membrane within the last 120 days (before the exam) is a disqualifying condition. Here's a link to standards dated 2010, which I hope is the most recent one. The applicable standard for your situation is on Page 5.

Based on my family's experience, assuming the condition is corrected, the simple passage of time would appear to mitigate the disqualifying condition.

2) Assuming the childhood asthma condition has disappeared, I would imagine a bronchial stress test, the name of which I can't recall, will be required. You'll have to see how that goes.

Hope this helps
