I need someone to recommend me a specific type of protien supplement that will get me "big". If someone has had great results with a protien tub or whatever it is called could you give me the name of it? There are SOOO many to choose from and I just started looking into this stuff and I don't know where to start. I saw a double chocolate triple chocolate nutty flavor I mean what the heck man! Is it harmful to your body if you take this stuff everyday?

People call me "skinny" but I'm not really "skinny" literally, I can do pushups and stuff. I'm not a "football player" size though. I run alot (Crosscountry+Tennis) too.

Thank you to anyone that help me!

I use syntha 6. It comes in a big red tub. I am happy with the results I am getting. I pair that with a pre-workout drink called M5 Extreme by Cellucor. The pre-workout is a bit of a stimulant, and it also has some creatine in it. An alternate to M5 Extreme would be Jack3D. This is a fairly powerful stimulant, but it doesn't have as much creatine.

I don't recommend creatine. It will get you big, but it's just water weight that will go away quick when you stop using it. (Also bad for your liver).

That being said, if you don't care about that, then go for it :p

It will be very hard to get big when you are a cross country runner. Make sure you eat a TON and LIFT a TON. Going heavy with less reps in the weight room helps with size (dont just do 1 repetition though, I would say ~8.)

I have a tub of Syntha 6 also, but I have never touched it! So I can say how the results are. I use Gold Standard (which I hear from a lot of people is great!)

Eat a lot of food. Get that protein in and carbs. Carbs = energy, protein = muscle rebuilding.

Also, all those flavors, no matter what you get, will probably taste pretty bad in water (you get used to it though...). It's a good idea to take it with chocolate milk (good for post-crazy workouts! Vanilla mixes good :D)

But yea, I don't like Creatine, but it does help get you BIG.

as a football player, i can tell you that its all about drinking water and eating the right foods.

Food wise, i would stick to high carb and high protein as stated above. My favorite combo was always steak and mashed(or baked) potatoes.

Supplement wise, pre-workout i used Force Factor(pills) or NO explode(powder) both of these are Nitric Oxide boosters. they swell the blood vessels based on the amount of water in the system (hence drink a lot of water when you work out). The swelling of the blood vessels increases strength and endurance.

During workout: water or Gatorade

Post workout: High protein shake. I used Muscle Milk (delicious) and got okay results. then i switched to EAS Myoplex (just as good) and received amazing results. Flavor is personal preference. I like chocolate peanut butter, banana or plain chocolate (EAS chocolate tastes just like Nesquik) I received the best results(and best taste) when using milk, as it has key protiens

EDIT: if you want to cut some unwanted fat, get a protein shake that has over 50% your daily dose. It helps to burn fat. If not then it will just go toward rebuilding muscle.

Honestly, you really don't need to take any supplements, and quite frankly its a waste of money. People expect to get big off of taking supps and working out twice a week. It's a false trap that many people who are beginners fall for. Many statistics show that men,(assuming you are a guy) don't reach their peak level of testosterone levels until they are about in their mid 20s, which is what many supplements require in order to have the most effective results. The best thing is to work out, using proper form and keep running. The caloric intake will take care of itself as you will notice that the more time you spend in the gym and working hard, the more you will tend to eat. Just remember, don't half ass it and work hard, thats basically all you need.

Any isowhey protein. Don't pay for the expensive stuff. AES is a great brand but cheaper stuff is fine. We buy ares from walmart. Isowhey is short chained amino acids and low in carbohydrates. What does that mean. None of the lactose intolerance problems and lower in carbohydrates and calories. don't go nuts with supplements.

What I always tell people is to be open minded but don't let your brain fall out.

lol, I'm a bit suspicious of all the supplements out there. However, I've been cutting back my meat intake (both because it cuts food costs and is not a bad choice health wise; chicken and turkey are still good, but i get bored of them!) while trying to still lift. My solution, a super tasty protein shake.
1.5 cups milk
2 heaping tablespoons peanut butter
2 heaping tablespoons vanilla yogurt
1 cup nuked plain oats (for consistency)
2 big scoops of chocolate muscle milk (whey works great too)
7 ice cubes.
Throw it all in a blender and let it go! Makes two big cups worth. It's my after workout snack and tastes o so good. :)

Another option besides supplements and meat include some nice high protein veggies. Beans are good. Lentils (great in soup or Indian style) are higher in protein per pound than most meat. The veggie options help keep down the fats and cholesterol while getting lots of protein. Recommend something like rice with lentils to get all the amino acids.

Turkey burgers are tasty! Ground turkey is cheap too.

I'll add some warning on other supplements (NO explode, NOS, etc.).
A) You won't have access to these in BCT. Might not be worth getting used to them
B) Many of these have been known to cause issues with urine testing in the DoDMERB. Be careful, being recalled will suck if they cause a problem.
C) As a beginning lifter, you really don't need these. Develop healthy lifting habits then worry about performance enhancers if you become more interested.

If you want to avoid gorging on chicken and steaks, whey protein is a good supplement (or if you like gorging it is still good). Focus on increasing your caloric intake and developing healthy lifting habits.

lol, a little more succinct way of what I said! :thumb:

I'll caveat that I'm in that peak zone lol. I don't mind taking a bit extra whey. :D

unless you are trying to make the football team, don't waste your money on anything. Does the NOxplode/Creatine/Protein mix work? If you are lifting for strength, yes. If you are lifting to prep for a high rep endurance fest, they will help, but not much. At this point, if you are going to use anything, stick with protein. I have heard rumors that the Nitric Oxide stuff can cause you to fail some part of the initial drug test, and creatine will only make you big as long as you keep using it. You wont have it during the summer. Stick with your basic diet (I'm assuming its okay since you are in good shape, etc.) then add a peanut butter sandwhich midway between breakfast and lunch, another between lunch and dinner, and lots of water. water ater water

I'm on GNC's generic protien it's got like 10 grams of creatine, I take a multivitamin stack every morning, and take jack3d as a pre workout. I eat ten times better and drink plent of water. Personally Ive gained 8 pounds in two weeks. However, big means slow and I don't want that for basic so I run as well. Just make sure you find a healthy balance of what you want. I've increased all my Maxs 10-20 lbs.

Amazing a great help from all of you. Thanks homies, I appreciate it. I'll think about the one ill get and see wasup.

Okay, here's the medical professional's opinion (and from someone who "tried to get big" in college)

1)AVOID AT ALL COSTS NoExplode or any other version of this type of supplement. I have seen more than one case of an individual have very serious health problems (as in potentially causing death) from someone who uses those supplements. Both were on active duty, one passed out and was a bit difficult to arouse and the other (more serious) was a guy who developed rhabdomyolysis (a condition where your body "eats" your own muscle causing potentially deadly kidney disease).

2)You don't need any supplements to gain weight UNLESS you simply cannot eat the calories required. In that case adding a protein only supplement can be helpful in order to increase your caloric intake. You want to get something with only protein and not loaded with other things like creatine. (By the way, did you know that supplement use is very restricted among military pilots??? For the Navy the only supplement you are allowed to use is protein)

3)Creatine - usually a simple waste of money.

4)To gain weight and strength you need to do two things: Eat more calories than you burn and do strength training. The eating of more calories is difficult when you are young and involved in sports. The strength training is important. You need to find a program that you can stick with. Personally I gained over 20lbs during my senior year of college by simply eating more and maintaining a good lifting program (Mon/Thu Chest/Tri, Tue/Fri: Back/Bi, Wed/Sat: Shoulder/Legs). Find a program that works for you on any number of websites and stick to it.

Overall you aren't going to gain a bunch of weight quickly (unless it's "water weight" through things like creatine). It takes time and dedication. Then as someone in the military you have to balance that with an aerobic base so you run into another trouble spot with gaining weight.

Bottom line: please, avoid anything other than a simple protein supplement, if you have to have anything at all. The other things out there are simply a crutch for the vast, vast majority of people and will be a simple waste of money. Basically you will be urinating dollar bills.

Thanks for the great advice KP...

But what ever happened to eating Egg Whites and Chicken breast when weight training?

Out here in CA, unless I'm buying at the commissary, these things are expensive! ~$4/lb for chicken off base.

One of the easiest things you can do to add muscle , in conjunction with a sane, well thought out workout routine, is to moderate you food intake. Your body can only metabolize 4 ounces of protein every four hours. So rather than eating three meals a day and patting yourself on the back for eating a 10oz steak for dinner, eat 4 ounces of protein every four hours. Its not as easy to do as it sounds, but with some planning is very doable.
Make sure your workout is sane, every year we read posts on here of some appointee who misses I day because of stress related injuries from trying to "beef up" or get into condition. They are heartbreaking to read!
