School Transfer for AROTC scholarship?

Sorry to hear the journey still isn't smooth for your son. If you go thru the current page, maybe one page further there is a great thread dealing with issues about the transfers many January winners were able to manage. Search for posts by ClarksonsArmy and MaristROTC for the most knowledgable information, both are ROOs for schools in NY, I believe.

Clarkson, thanks again for writing and posting your blogs, and otherwise assisting with the questions on this forum. I can't imagine how many hours of telephone "on hold" time you have saved us over these months. You are a credit to your profession, and your school is lucky to have you. I truly hope that my son's future ROO and cadre display the same level of commitment and care.

Colleges now available on the status portal. 3rd and 5th choices were offered (an in-state and an out of state public), both ruled out now for various reasons. 1st choice was flagship in-state to which he has already accepted admission and plans to attend regardless. CC administrator told us this morning they can not initiate a transfer without a signed offer letter that they are mailing this week. What are our odds of receiving a transfer from in-state to in-state? Cost is the same for both.

Call admissions at the school and explain the situation. Maybe there is a possibility that they can fax you a copy of the letter so you can fax it to CC and get the ball rolling.

I think h2ocop is talking about the offer letter from Cadet Command, signed and returned accepting the letter. I'm sure they already have the acceptance letter from the school. Since some of those offer letters haven't even been sent for the third round, until it arrives in the mailbox it's not an official offer.
Still no telling how many of these requests to transfer will be honored, and what criteria will be used. I have two requesting transfer to my school. Both are asking to increase the cost of the scholarship, so I'm on pins and needles.

I spoke to Cadet Command and was told my DD transfer was still being reviewed because the school we want is more expensive. They provided me the following possible outcomes:
"Even if the change is approved it may be downgraded to a 3year advanced designee
(3AD) which would not pay any benefits her freshman year, but would pay for her remaining years beginning her sophomore year if she is still eligible at that time. (IE has been enrolled in ROTC, has CGPA of 2.5, 3.0 GPA in ROTC classes, meets height and weight, passes fitness test)"
We were also told if you had any other scholarship to the more expensive school to give them that information. My DD won a merit competition for 12000 a year to the more expensive school, renewable on the same conditions as ROTC (except weight and PT) and they said they could use that to offset the cost.

We will be requesting a transfer from in-state to another in-state with same tuition and fees. I assume that, based on other posts, our chances are pretty good of getting the transfer approved in this circumstance. Anybody disagree?

We are praying for a transfer here. From one in state school to another. We have been offered more academic money at the 2nd school and it would cover our room & board. we really can't afford the room & board at the school that the army picked.

UMDCP. UNCCH, VT all charge OOS students 12K+, closer to 18K. Guess what? They don't have AC, they charge for lofting a bed, and live in dorms with cinder brick walls.
I believe for our DD IS at VT it was close to 10K. Where they get you is the board. Gone are the days of pick 14, 15 or 21 meals, now it is mind boggling because it is $$$ and than school dollars, i.e. VT = Hokie bucks, UMDCP=Terp, VCU=Ram. Your cranium actually hurts trying to figure out the meal plan.
You need to know your kid's eating habits. Our kids don't eat breakfast, so the min was fine and they always had money left over to share with friends who took the cheaper plan. If your kid eats a lot, like our youngest (6'4. 240 lbs) you need to pay for the cadillac plan, and that can be @1500 a yr more, bringing you to the 12K!
Schools have learned to nickel and dime you at every chance. Loft 100 bucks. 1 time administration fee =200. Hutch for the desk = 100. Technology fee = 200. Carpet for the room = 100.
Some schools have even gotten to the point that you can pay an extra fee to guarantee they won't get hit with a triple.
They make the airlines with their fees look like amateurs. Join a sorority, OMG, that can be close to 1K bucks, and that is before buying the pin, and the outfit for initiation.
AFROTC, and you will find yourself buying the Mess Dress in their Jr/Sr yr. Total cost @$500 before alterations. Just bought DS's last month so I know that is current cost.
At graduation you will also get nailed! That is my pet peeve...the school gets @ 100K over 4 yrs for IS, and you are telling me I have to PAY for the diploma? Seriously, they couldn't gift that to us? I am not asking for it to be framed, just the dang gone diploma. They also require you to buy the colors to wear with their gown.
Best yet on top of them calling you to donate money when their endowment funds are 1/2 BILLION, they than send GUILT letters 2X a semester to buy goodie packages to be delivered to the child for $25-50 for mid-terms and finals....can we all say fund raising?
Like I said 2 kids in college in 2 different states, both at flagships, I am disgusted with what they get away with, IMPO if our govt wants to cut funding they should start at the universities and federal aid.
Yale or Harvard has such a large endowment that every undergrad and grad student could attend free and they would not touch the principal, just interest. Yet, they have kids on Pell grants = tax payer dollars.
VT has 550 Million endowment. Same deal.
Why are we not forcing colleges to ante up, but at the same time require the military to ante up. At least for the military these kids will serve our country for yrs. Tell me that is true for the Pell Grant student who attends Yale?

University of Colorado - Boulder...room and board = $11,500 (with least expensive meal plan). Tuition - is "only" $9000(in state)! Of course, you add books and fees, and they are probably about the same. College costs are out of control, for sure.
We are very thankful for the scholarship - probably could not afford to send our son to CU without it.
My older son attends the University of Idaho, my younger son is about to follow him there. The school is out of state for us. Both sons will be on a AROTC scholarship. The room and board contract for the school was $7800.00 per year, this was for the full meal plan as well. What we found to be interesting was when our son expressed an interest in joining a fraternity before the freshman year started we looked into the costs, thinking it would be quite a bit higher. To our surprise the Frat bill for housing in the house and food, they have a full time cook, was $5,000.00 per year.
My older son is now a junior and is living in an apartment with roommates. We pay his portion of the rent, $3000.00 per year, the ROTC stipend he receives now, $450.00 per month covers his food and expenses.
We found that colleges across the country have a wide variety of options and costs, it made our head spin sometimes.
My younger son plans to join his brothers Frat. Neither did this for the lower cost, it was however a nice benefit for our pocket book. We weren't to sure about Frat life blending with ROTC and school but he has prospered and had a great time, has made friends he will have for a lifetime.

Compared to other colleges this must mean 3 meals a week and tents. Humorous for sure when you compare costs. Can heat and meat really cost that much less in South Dakota?
