Hi all! Grandparents of ds going to KP want to know what to get him as a HS graduation gift (along w/ $). I was thinking, possibly a calculator, digital recorder. Can anyone tell me what is the most useful TI calculator model (son has TI-84 from HS)? Are digital recorders allowed in lectures? Any other suggestions? Thanks!

I know the 89 isn't allowed in lower math, but I'm in calc 2, and it's a great thing to have. It does anything and everything you'll ever need.

From what I could tell when I researched calculators for calc, physics, etc. it seemed like that is the one. Appreciate your help!

i know kids that used an 89 in calc I and II. maybe the rules changed since last year though. i used an 84 for all my classes thus far and have had no problems, although the 89s are cool. something else that would probably be useful would be a good knife, KP requires that you carry one and the one they issue is hardly worth the stainless it's made of.

Got the kiddo a Spyder Co knife for Xmas. That was a first! Would it be something I bring on parents weekend? Obviously kiddo can't fly with it to indoc. Shipped separately through the mail?

if theyre checking bags, that would work. if not, send it after indoc. theyre required to carry the issued hunk during indoc anyway.

I have both the ti89 and the ti84. I am looking to go deck. which one would be better? i dont want to bring both and run with both during indoc.

I am more comfortable with the ti84 but i dont know if i should learn to use the ti89.

Blizzard if you decide to sell the 89 I am sure someone on this forum would be interested in re-homing it with a fair price and added postage so you don't have to take it to INDOC. First dibbs!

Trust me i was going to sell it. and also i just dont know which one i should bring. if you can convince me either way i would gladly sell the other one for a fair price!

My son swears by the ti89, he uses it for ap Calculus this year and would never go back to the ti84......:thumb:

Bring the 84 and have the 89 shipped in a care package, this way you can have them both. DS uses the 89 most of the time but for quick calculations will sometimes go back to the 84.

honestly, for deckies the 84 is just as good. you have to be able to justify most of the calculations it does for you by hand anyway, so really all its doing is checking your work. if you already have one, it might be worth having it shipped to you, but like i said an 84 is fine.

what can you do on the 89 that you cant on the 84?

Everything... My teacher litterally comes to me to check answers! And ever get sick of redoing whole equations because you missed a prentheses? Welcome to the 89 my friend where you see the whole thing and it's easily fixable. It's incredible.

are you serious!?!?! calc would be so much easier this year with that thing!!! i wished i would have known about it!! add that to the tab lol

What about TI-nspires? I have the one with the letter keypad at the bottom of the calculator. I do have a TI-84 keypad that can attach to the nspire. Would that work if nspires are not allowed?
