My daughter (HS Junior) just received the following e-mail:
“Thank you for your interest in attending the United States Naval Academy Summer Seminar. We regret that we are unable to offer you an invitation to this year’s program, and yet want to assure you that attendance at Summer Seminar is not a prerequisite for admission to the Naval Academy. Your application to Summer Seminar served as a preliminary application for admission to the Naval Academy. You will receive a letter from us in May, 2011 that will provide more information about what you should do next to pursue your interest in the Academy.
Based on the credentials of your application, I would like to offer you the opportunity to spend a weekend at USNA. This Candidate Visit Weekend program is an opportunity to sample university level academics at a first-rate institution, to discover whether the Naval Academy will help you achieve your goals, and to offer valuable insight into the admissions process. You will have the opportunity to attend classes, participate in sporting activities, lodge in the midshipmen dormitory and tour the excellent facilities at USNA. There is no cost for this program, but you are responsible for travel to and from USNA. The Candidate Visit Weekend will begin at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday 28 April and will conclude at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday 30 April.
Due to the popularity of this program and limited space available, I encourage you to contact the Office of Admissions as soon as possible by calling 410-293-1858 to register for this opportunity. Please do not make any travel arrangements until you have confirmed your visit with the Office of Admissions.
GO NAVY!”
Her application for NASS reflected her athletic accomplishments (Pole Vaulting and other track events), which are quite impressive (and actually have improved since she applied to NASS). The invitation is not leaving us much time to prepare for the trip to Annapolis, and will make the third weekend in a row for me that I am making the 600 mile round trip of death (TRAFFIC up the wazoo!). My son is youngster at USNA and it just happened that two weeks ago him and his friends needed me to take them to Virginia for a triathlon and last weekend we visited him for Easter.
On top of all that, my daughter is currently down with a foot injury due to faulty mat placement at her last meet, so she likely will not be able to participate in sports during the CVW.
So, would it be advisable to try to reschedule? I am guessing that this particular weekend is carefully calculated to coincide with the classes just ending, but just before finals are given at USNA. The athletes are still around and working out daily. In a couple of weeks the brigade is done with classes, block zero starts, Herndon, CW, etc., and everyone begins their summer doings.
If she goes ahead with it, she will be hobbling around for the weekend, and will not be able to work out athletically with her Varsity counterparts. Do they even want to be bothered with her if she can’t perform athletically? While this will be a limited visit because of her injury, she is still dying to do it anyway. While she is a very good student (B+ / A), she will never be “recruited” academically like my son was (he is breezing through Mech E with a 4.0!).
What is the likelihood of her being rescheduled; or for that matter come to this CVW, and then again when she has healed and is back in action (next opportunity would presumably be in the fall)? I have tried to call admissions, but was transferred and had to leave a VM.
