Our daughter is confirming her acceptance today.

It was a tough couple of days in this house as she was initially disappointed and needed some time to understand the opportunity she was being given.

Her plan B was to play her sport at a Division 1 program with a tremendous school spirit and fan base. It is the epitomy of a college experience- huge football games, crowds for all sports, etc.

Choosing a remote military college to study a LOT with no guarantee, AND not play her sport at first seemed unlikely. It was fun as parents to watch her remind herself each day of why she applied to the USCGA in the first place. We stayed quiet - very hard.

What was extraordinary was the input she received from the friends she assumed would be negative towards giving up "super fun" for military life. These kids were awesome! Many pointing out to her that sports are temporary and this is the time to make life decisions. As she repeated their words, we'd be dumbstruck as they were saying what we would have. As parents we think that kids are not listening - apparently they are. She got more support and encouragement from 18 year old girls than she did from 40+ year old women who couldn't contain their own personal fears.

What was absolutely amazing was the email she received this morning from the head coaches at the school she is turning down. Sure they are disappointed. But, what they wrote were kind words to commend a 17 year old girl on making a decision to serve her country and get a great education. What a class act.

I look forward to hearing from other parents as their students make their choices. These forums have been a great help to us.

Very cool . Congratulations . I think she made the right choice, and I am sure she will do well .

Lucky10 thanks for the update!

Good on your daughter for making such a tough and mature decision. And good on her friends for their support and the coaches for their understanding.

She sounds like a special young woman who will be a great addition to the corps of cadets.

Keep us informed of her progress in the coming yeaer!:thumb:

Your daughter indeed has great friends. My daughter's friends did (and still do) the exact opposite! Here is what I have over heard them say as I was driving her and her friends to the mall last year Christmas: "What do you want to go there for? I thought you were going to Ohio State?" "Are you kidding me. . . no Facebook?" "You have to get up at what time in the morning? I have all my classes arranged so nothing starts before 10:00 AM." "So, I guess there are no parties, right?"

My daughter got a little sheep-ish.

I said, "Why don't you tell your friends about the trips you have been on so far this year? I'm sure they would like to hear about going to Canada, seeing 5th Avenue in New York, and sailing on EAGLE."

My daughter perked up and told some of the stories and then the other girls said, "You've done all that in the first semester? Wow, I haven't seen anything but campus."

Those were EXACTLY the comments I was expecting to hear. Except for the Ohio State one... ours is a die hard Michigan fan:)

We do live in a military friendly community so perhaps that is helping.

Thank you for all your kind words...

BruceRTalbot,

I do the same things to my friends back home.

"You have to stay on the boat every 5th day? Why? You are at sea for 2 weeks at a time with no facebook? What?"

It does get to me, sometimes. But then I recall that I've had some pretty amazing times, because of the Coast Guard. Enjoying a rum and coke on a Spanish beach, seeing third world countries in Western Africa, and living on the West Coast, East Coast, and in Alaska all within two years. I could go on all day.

I've given up a lot of things (waking up post 10:00 on a Monday, tons of free time) but I've been given so much more. It's a pretty fair trade, if I say so myself.

I know that feeling well

Congratulations to you DD. My son had a similar experience with his friends this year. He will be playing football when he gets to the academy. It truly is a wonderful thing to see all the support from such young minds.

On to MMI
