NROTC Summer Cruise

Yes I have heard the same, however all 4C's (freshmen) in DS battalion were offered summer cruise. Summer cruise destination split evenly between west and east coast. Initially battalion command asked if any MIDN's wanted to opt out of CORTRAMID due to classes, work or other issues.

I think what will really be up in the air is class of 16 because we all know Obama has asked the SOD to cut 1 TRILLION in that budget over the next decade. Sending ROTC mids on a cruise may convert to a carrot option due to the cost.
I know AF has already cut what is deemed as their "basic" after commissioning and prior to career schools for next yr (2012 cadet grads). It is called Air and Space Basic Course. It is for jr officers.
Money is tight and the DOD is going to have to cut things. It will be all about the ROI. A summer cruise may be viewed as a low ROI compared to keeping the scholarship pot at the level it is currently at in the budget.

My son is NROTC - the first summer cruise, after freshman year, was 30 days - evenly split - about 1 week in each specialties - SUBS, SURFACE, AIR and Marine. Last summer even the Marine option scholarships did same thing.
After that summer Marines do something different - Navy is supposed to have 2nd class cruise (after sophmore year) this year it was a 2 weeks enlisted cruise - is waivable for academics, the final summer - after your junior year - called 1st class cruise is MANDATORY - since we haven't done it yet cant say for sure the exact length - but it is supposed to be officer training cruise and should be 30 days or so - we will experience that next summer.
As others will say, budgets, etc could change things - just wanted to give you what I know - don't think it matters, but son is NROTC at VMI. larrys mom
