Hopefully all the candidates in PA are seeking nominations from BOTH Senators Casey and Toomey....along with their US Representative.

Yes, I'm planning on seeking a nomination from Senators Bob Casey and Pat Toomey. I will seek a nomination from US Rep Allison Shwartz (13th district). She will only give you a nomination if you have NOT received one from a State Senator or Vice President. Is this the case with all U.S. Reps?

equestriangrl93:

No, senators and reps can choose to handle multiple nominations any way they want. In a competitive state, they may confer and not give a nomination to someone if that person already has one from someone else. Or they can give nominations to the same person, but do it for different service academies (one would nominate for USMA and one for USAFA, for example). That way more people from that state/district get nominations. In our state, the 2 senators talked and made sure they didn't duplicate nominations, but they didn't bother talking to the reps, so my son had nominations from 1 senator and his rep and the VP. (And by the way, state senators can't nominate, only U.S. senators, which is probably what you meant, but just to clarify for anyone reading this thread.) And for VP nominations, the VP's staff will give a list of applicants (so make sure you apply everyone!) to the service academy for the service academy to pick from (assuming you are qualified)--the VP himself (or staff) doesn't choose his final nominees/appointees. Usually the VP nom/appointment is saved for special cases--maybe an LOA that didn't get any other noms, a recruited athlete, etc. It gives an academy some flexibility in how they assign appointments. At least that's how it was for the AFA.

This was also the case this past year in the PA 18 district. Rep Tim Murphy's office coordinated with both US Senators' staffs and would only give one nomination per SA. Pennsylvania at the US Senator level is VERY competitive and uses SA specific boards. Our US Rep also used SA specific boards but of course had far fewer candidates.

Are you applying to more than one SA? If so you should spend some time reading the threads on whether/how to list you choices on the nomination applications. Good Luck!

I know this thread is from forever ago, but I applied for a nomination for West Point for 2015. At least last year (may change with Toomey replacing Specter), the Senators did not talk, as I and others received nominations from both. Not all of the Representatives talk with the Senators either, as I received a nomination from my Representative. Good luck with the process and if you have any specific questions about interviews or anything let me know!

I have to choose between two U.S. Reps. because of mailing address. Does anyone know which is MORE competitive, Pat Meehan or Allyson Shwartz? Thanks for your help!

A mailing address should not play any part in where your Congressional district is location. The physical location of your legal domicile (where you live) is what matters.

You cannot be concurrently represented by 2 Congressmen, as you cannot concurrently live in 2 Congressional districts.

If you apply to the wrong wone, you may not get anything.

Make sure you know what you are doing, as a wrong "guess" here could have serious consequences, as a MOC can only nominate a legal resident of their district.
