So I know they said only bring a bag and minimal civilian clothing for in-processing, but what about after training? Can we bring in photos or books afterwards into our rooms or would that be a bad idea?

For in-processing, should we just have the necessities they write in the checklist, and then the clothes on our backs?

Do not take anything but what is on the checklist (even less than what is on the checklist). Take one backpack that includes all your necessary paperwork. That's it if you are male. The only exception is if you are female include undergarments/supplies in the backpack. You will be issued everthing else.

You will not be able to wear civies until after Recognition unless you travel more than 150 miles away from Academy. Do not get caught with civies in your room before Recognition. It will be painful, very painful for you and other doolies in your squad if they are found during an inspection.

After Parent's Weekend, most doolies are allowed certain items (monitors, printers, etc.) at the discretion of the squadron. Your parents can bring approved items then but not before.

Good Luck,

There have been some threads about bringing black compression shorts. Some say it is OK. Any advice there? Thanks.

They are OK, but you may or may not be able to use them during BCT. It depends on the cadre.

Our son took a new pair of contact lenses that were left in his overnight bag that was taken at the start of basic. He was allowed to have them back as soon as basic was over and before Acceptance Day. However, he didn't get to wear them, and wore his own personal glasses, for Acceptance Day because he had gotten an eye infection in Jack's Valley.

black compression shorts are easy to find - anyone have any sources on white ones? (i may be asking the obvious but i've bought my son black ones before and boxers - never looked for white compression shorts)

Also, how do you pack them so they are not taken away?

As for the question about packing them.....I believe it really is going to be more of a matter of the squadron he gets assigned to. It will kind of be the "luck of the draw" so to speak. My son was able to use his, but I know others who had their's confiscated.

I know my son left his cell phone and charger with his sponsor family. We wish that he had taken it, with him. Some Cadets were able to use their phones during 4th of July.

When my son first arrived to BCT, he basically didn't have a sponsor family. Athletes were assigned to their recruiter/coach. "At least for football; I can't speak for the other sports". So during doolie day out, he and some others went to the coach's house. The coach took their cell phones and such PRIOR to inprocessing. The players met at falcon stadium press box for a late breakfast. Then, all the players went to inprocessing together. The coaches already had their cell phones and personal items. Which worked out nice. During BCT, they were assigned to the football team during the periods when the rest of the basics were playing some type of physical activity. Even though they were working out, it was a nice diversion from the rest of BCT. Even if it was only a few hours a couple times a week.

But as has been said, everything depends on where you're assigned. Certain rules change class to class; year to year; squadron to squadron. You'll find out when you get there.

Academy also has them. My DS picked some up a few weeks ago.

agreed... buy two..if they ask tell them it will help prevent chaffing, but its up to cadre..

Son took black compression shorts and was able to wear them in his squadron. Also took cell phone and charger which he used on Doolie Day Out. The past two years the basics did not actually leave for Doolie Day Out - it was Doolie Day In but they got their cell phones back and got to use them. Even though they had land lines setup for the basics to use, it was nice to have your own cell phone as your phone directory was in it and you could text AND MOST IMPORTANT I got a self-portrait of him he sent from his phone. Priceless!
