My understanding is that plebes can wear their own running shoes if they are sufficiently white. How white do they have to be? All the decent shoes I've seen have swooshes and all manner of designs on them.

My plebe brought THESE and had no issues. I think that as long as they're not bright orange or gold or ??? you'l be OK.

Throughout your military career, you will see and hear the term "must be conservative in nature" applying to the wear of uniforms, uniform components, cosmetics, etc. Essentially, this is what USNA is saying with regards to the running shoes.

Wish that was the way it was when i went though b/c the New Balance shoes I was issued gave me horrible shin splints that turned into stress fractures.

I had been doing the 8wk training program that was in my packet and had no issues w/ running until I was told i had to wear the shoes issued to me

glad to see they've gotten smarte

How about Vibrams? I run in these w/ my unit but not sure how the USNA would take it.

these are great, but navy policy states that you must wear socks with these while conducting PT test. navy is still trying to determine if they give people an added advantage over regular tennis shoes...crazy right?!?! i doubt they'll let you wear these during plebe summer, not to mention at the rate you have to get ready and change in and out of different uniforms i really wouldn't want to have to deal w/ that during plebe summer.

i have two pair of these and love them...actually i find them great to run in too and have no issues w/ shin splints or the like.

Love my vibrams ... don't think they give me an "advantage." Just think they help me run properly. I'm able to feel the pain if I get lazy & I'm not running effectively. I can see why the Academy wouldn't allow them during Plebe Summer, but would they allow them during the academic year, on our own workout time ?

You can purchase socks to wear with them if you want, but my feet sweat too much when I wear them, although it decreases the time to put them on your feet. I've had them for 2 months and ran a PR 5K last weekend in them knocking off 3 minutes from my last PR. I don't know about advantage but my form has definitely improved. I can put them on in about 15 seconds a piece, which is forever in boot camp/plebe time, but it couldnt hurt I suppose.

This is something that I read last year, and therefore spent a lot of time searching for a perfect pair that was mostly white. But I can tell you that this is not really a rule at all. I did not hear one kid get yelled at for his shoes at all. They can be any color you want. Your only going to be wearing them in the morning for PEP, so just get what is most comfortable and works best for you. As far as the vibrams, I would probably steer clear of them during the summer. You dont want to draw more attention to yourself. As far as the Ac year, they are fine. My roommate wears them all the time, and I have seen many mids wearing them. Hope that helps! Enjoy your time as much as you can now. Your time at the Academy will come soon enough...... Any other questions for someone that just completed plebe year, feel free to shoot them my way.

LAPTOPS! I see no mention of laptops. I'm sure as a top of the line academy, there is a required usage for computers. Do you bring your own, or do they issue one to you, as well as internet access, ect.

Really curious about that one.. not to hijack the thread.

The members of the Class of 2014 were issued desktops and netbooks, although my son has told me that he rarely uses his netbook. In fact, it was inoperable for over 2 months at one point and he never missed it.

I saw lots of pictures of last summer's plebe class during PEP, (looking for my DD!) and saw every color shoe you could imagine. They all have swoosh's, zigs, whatever, but best not to attract attention to yourself and just buy as white a pair as possible with whatever label is on it and be comfy.

BEST ADVICE (learned from Boy Scouts) - wear SOCK LINERS. DD wore a pair in on I-Day, and I mailed 6 pair to her immediately. I think they were pitched afterwards, but they take up the friction between the sock and the skin and NO BLISTERS!. After first phone call 2 weeks in, I mailed 6 more pair to share with company-mates because they were all nursing blisters!

They are available online (campmor).

OH - netbooks: my daughter drags hers everywhere and uses it all the time. I guess it's just what you're used to!
