I understand that candidates only get one shot at the CFA. My son is attending SLS in a few weeks and apparently they do the CFA during the week. Can anyone tell me if this counts as their only chance?

yes on one chance.

However, this is more pass or fail than how high you can score and if he fails there is a good chance he could get a waiver to retake it. The regional commander gives the waiver.

You can take it multiple times, but you can only submit it once. Therefore do not submit it until you are completely satisfied with your score. When I went to the NASS we also took the CFA, but I was also able to submit another one. I do not know if it is the exact same thing for USMA, but I was able to submit it again.

The SLS CFA is basically a free shot. Your scores will automatically be submitted, but if you do not like them, you will be able to retake it at home with your gym teacher or whoever. They'll talk to you about it while you're at SLS to tell you the same thing, but still, be prepared to do your best so you can get it out of the way in June

Thanks everyone for your quick responses! The problem is that my son had major shoulder surgery last winter and has just been released to do things like pullups and pushups (and basketball throws) within the last few weeks. Normally I think he would have done well with these events, but considering he hasn't used the arm for anything for so long, he's not sure how he's going to do. He has been practicing and he should pass, but considering no one really knows what the minimums are, you just don't know.

When I went to SLS last summer I had just been diagnosed with a stress fracture, so when we did the CFA I did all of the components except the shuttle run and mile run. Your son would likely be able to tell the test administrators that he can't do certain parts (pushups, pul lups) and then the SLS CFA would not count towards his application.

If he can safely perform each event, he can take the CFA at SLS. Once he has done that, they will give him a score report that tells him what his scores were and if he failed any events. If he passed everything, he can simply keep those scores. If he failed a single event, he will need to retake it at home with a gym teacher until he passes each event. Once he has passed each event and is satisfied with the scores, he can submit. ONCE you submit, there is no way to submit new scores without a waiver from the rc.

bottom line- the cfa at sls is a freebie- do well, and you are good to go, do poorly and you can redo it at home
