I am too young to enter the academy the year I graduate so I am hoping to spend the year studying abroad with the National Security Language Initiative (a scholarship from the Department of State). I believe the nomination is the one step of this application process which would cause difficulty. I can get all forms and medicals dont in the summer before I leave but I heard that the interviews are in the fall. Has anyone done an interview over the phone or skype for their nomination? Is this allowed? Or is there a different procedure for those not living within the US who can not get to their representative? Thank You!

I know that there was an gentleman who is Active Duty Coast Guard that was applying through my Senator's office for an Air Force nomination. Since he was on duty, they did his interview over the phone. I would call your Representative's/ Senator's office and ask what their policy is. They tend to be very flexible if you are up front with them from the start.

DS had no interview for Senate (state is too large), congressman waived interview since he was overseas. (Received nom from 1 senator and congressman)

Be sure to use your parents' mailing address (if possible) so there is only one point of contact for all mailings. In MOC nomination packet, DS included a letter stating that he was overseas.

I chair the nomination panel for USAFA for my MOC. We interviewed an active duty Coast Guardsman via telephone as he was in port in Hawaii during the interviews...not a problem.

My guess is that is the process you would face.

Thanks for all these responses, the idea seems to be the same that I would be able to do this. I will contact my congressperson's office if I actually get to do this study abroad but this makes me much more sure in pursueing the plan. Thank you!

I think you will want to contact both your Senator's office and your Representative's office -- you will want to apply to both for nominations. So contact the service academy rep at all offices from which you might be able to receive a nomination (most congressmen, if not all, have a designated person or persons).
