not to make a cliche post, but i would really like to get some insight on how to better improve my chances of being accepted. Ok, to start off, im 15, and a sophomore in high school. Im in JROTC and im an active member of all the teams except marksmanship (raiders, drill team, color guard and even a team that my school made that is called "excel team" which is basically a team that helps if an event in our community needs volunteers.) i'm taking relatively difficult classes right now (Calculus H. namely) and next year ill be taking even harder ones (AP Calculus, AP US history, English 3 H., and Phyisics H. this summer, along with JROTC and Constitutional Law H.) im also going to be drill team commander my senior year (the official drill team commander for next year already told me this for sure.) one of my major issues i believe will be my sports. I know the USNA takes sports very seriously, but with JROTC and my classes next year, i wont be able to do any sports because of the lack of time and interference of drill team (which is the exact time as one of the only sports i could join for sure.) i am also well in the top 3rd of my class and have maintained above a 4.0 GPA since the beginning of my freshman year. so that's about it, what do you guys think are my chances and/or what do i need to improve? any feedback would be greatly appreciated

Agreed. My son rode horses, competitively for years. He knew USNA would want a more conventional sport, so chose cross country. Got him in shape for USNA while showing his willingness to fit a sport in.

Along with its corollary " I couldn't take (pick a highly desirable AP course) because it intefers with my ROTC slot" are the two reasons USNA does not necessarily look favorably at JROTC participation. Traditional high school students, all things considered, with a mixture of sports and challenging coursework, will be more competitive.

Here's an idea my BGO gave me:
get fit and participate in 5k runs

I also didn't do sports till this past year (soccer, never got to play for varsity just sat as back-up, and even saw very limited time with jv bc it was unfair for other teams to play vs someone my age and size).

I also plan on doing X country and track next year.
I did JROTC last year, year before, and will also do it next year. However, I do feel that JROTC should be be done in place of other things. I am also in scouting and other school activities.

No one in my unit has gone to a service academy but several have out of the IB program at my school (I do plan on changing that ).

Also, standardized testing, SAT and/or ACT, is very important.

As already noted, you need to find a way to shoehorn sports into your schedule, and cross-country is a good one for starters. You need to ensure that you get chemistry in at the highest level it is offered at your school - and a tough grammar course as well. Personally I strongly recommend starting to prep for taking the SAT and ACT exams in the very near future and plan to take them until you are comfortable that you have reached your personal max. You are ahead of many of your peers, now use the time to your best advantage to take the high ground. Best wishes.

One of the cadets in my JROTC program actually found a way to alternate their drill schedule and track schedule. He talked to his coach and the drill team commander and was able to find a compromise. I'm not sure how well this may go over with your superiors (commander and coach) but see if you can find the balance between the sport and your drill team.

Almost every high school has 1 or 2 sports teams with no cuts. Find that team and go out for the sport. You do not have to be sucessfull at the sport just be a part of a varsity team. It allows you to check the box so to speak for sports participation. If you have to choose JROTC or the sport pick the sport over JROTC.

I never had trouble balancing JROTC and track/xc. If I was a little late to practice because of JROTC my coach wold be okay with it. Granted, I only did drill for a year before avoiding it like the plague, but stuff like raider/orienteering fit into my schedule fine.
