I picked my son up at school this weekend and had the chance to talk with the PMS and ROO. My younger son will be starting there next year as well and we were discussing the class size for next year.

They were both lamenting over the process this year. Last year they had 8 Scholarship Cadets, this year they were given 3, only 2 accepted to the school. They do not anticipate anymore or do they think they will have funds for campus scholarships, their comment was the CC was still sorting out all the budget issues.

The interesting part of the conversation was in regard to the National Guard. They both told me that the Guard had put a moratorium on SMP for the beginning of the year due to the fact that they were full per the current recruiting levels. They said that they have students that have signed up for the ROTC program that were looking towards the NG or campus scholarship money that will now have to find other ways to finance college while waithing for everything to sort out.

Has anyone else heard of NG Moratoriums in their states, my son is attending school in Idaho, we live in Washington.

Keep in mind that not everyone that is SMP is on scholarship either. The GRFD scholarships will be cut back too. You can still put a big dent in your tuition bill just with drill pay, TA, stipend, and GI bill/kicker. I expect the competition for the limited GRFD funds will only grow. These funds used to be easier to get, because most cadets wanted to keep active duty on the table.

I was wondering about the TA. Do you forsee them cutting back on the overall SMP program in the future.

NG is also the one based in state budgets too, correct? Reserves are national - that is what we understood, because some states offer differing financial incentives, while Reserves were across the board the same.

Will be in touch with our ROO and NG recruiter - let you know what the skinny is in Ohio.

I believe you are correct about the Reserves, the Roo and PMS I was talking with mentioned only the National Guard.

National Guard is a state run organization.

Don't forsee any cut back in SMP. SMP doesn't really cost anything, so there will be no need to cut back. My understanding is that TA funds are finite, so each year it is incumbent on the soldier to file early for the benefit. The Guard and Reserves are always going to need Officers, and the best source for those Officers (2lts) is ROTC.

Just to clarify about TA -
Federal tuition assistance is a federal program open to all enlisted soldiers - even those in the Guard and those in college. It's not really a SMP program.

Even with budget cuts - it would be catastrophic for the Pentagon to cut tuition assistance out of the budget completely; IMO

There is no moratorium in Ohio. Hope the incoming freshman in Oregon can scramble to find other funding in time for fall. Is Washington state also under moratorium?
