The Parents club liaison sent out the following information about computers and email addresses. The cadets don't pay the money up front, it is taken from their earnings. I know that my son was anxious to get this info last year so I am posting it:

Email Address: C15first.last@usafa.edu
There are some exceptions for long names, e.g. Christopher shortened to Chris

Common Issues and Questions:

• Why tablet computers? – The selection committee decided the pedagogical reasons for tablets out-weighed the increased cost and weight. The tablet can be used for taking hand-written notes in class, including math formulas, drawings, diagrams, etc.

• Can upperclass cadets buy the same computer? Yes, they need to email Larry Bryant before 10 July, so one can be delivered on 1 Aug for them.

• Printers are not included in the computer purchase for several reasons:
o It is a “personal preference” item – some want cheap black and white, while others want high-quality photo printers.
o They are not necessary, since we provide squadron printers.
o They make good gifts for parents and grandparents.

• We teach “computer ethics” in Comp Sci 110 to convince cadets that certain common practices done in high school (e.g. illegally copying music or movies) are no longer acceptable and are punishable.

I’ll be happy to address any other questions the parents ask. They can call me at 719-333-3994 or email larry.bryant@usafa.edu

That's awesome! Thank you tutmom for posting the information, it will help me get through basic knowing that I will be getting a nice computer at the end ;)

This is actually a pretty nice computer. I'm surprised. :shake: They should've went for the i7 though if they really wanted it to have some retainability.

Something caught my eye… I think they meant 1 – 320GB 7200 rpm Hard Drive not 1320GB. That would make it a 1.3TB drive and those types of drives usually come in increments of .5 TB (i.e. 1, 1.5,2, etc.). Now don’t get me wrong I could be way off and it really does have 1320GB drive in it but just pointing it out just in case…

It does mean 320 GB HDD. I've yet to come across a laptop with even a 1 TB HDD. I noticed that earlier too. XD

They're out there but usually attached to the higher end laptops but the base models don't have them you have to upgrade into them.

Our processor clocks about the same, but you have more memory and a faster hard drive (most laptops have 5400 rpm not 7200 rpm) so probably a noticeable difference.

This one is also a second generation i5 so it will be faster and more efficient. The battery life on this model is insane

Probably not, considering VOIP is prohibited according to the Cadet Sight Picture (essentially the Academy rule book).

It's interesting thought that they're switching from Fujitsu, which the past three classes have had.

that is quite a bit of RAM for a laptop... It's more than my desktop currently has... not bad!

Does anyone know if this is the same for all of the Academies? USNA? USAFA? etc

video card?

I noticed the video card was not listed. Does anyone know what video card is in the laptop? Thanks

I looked on another site, and it said that it was "Intel HD Graphics", so I'm inclined to think that it's just a standard video card without any dedicated memory.

But does anyone know if preppies get this computer as well, or if we even get a computer at all?

Yes, the Lenovo X220T has Intel's HD 3000 graphics which means that the GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) is part of the CPU itself. Very few laptops have an separate video card and none the size of the X220T have a separate card or dedicated graphics memory. The video memory is shared with the main system memory (4 or 8 GB in this case). The graphics received fairly good reviews from what I have read. It's no gaming rig but for such a small laptop, it appears to perform very well.
