Next Steps for DS

DS finished sophmore year at challenging school. 4.27/4.00 GPA with
APUSH, AP Geo, plus 7 PAP courses. Taking AP Chem, APUSH, AP Eng, PAP preCal, and Debate next year.

Superscore ACT is MATH 32, Read 31, Science 33, and English 33. Took 3 tests so far in HS and made 29, 30, and 31. Taking ACT on Saturday with Writing. Shooting for 33+ composite

2 Varsity letters in X-Country, JV Soccer last 2 years and captain this year, and Club Soccer.

Activities: Mission trip to Honduras, organized school clothes drive for orphanage, service award last two years, Eagle Scout, church youth group, debate team, winner of State Novice debate tournament, run several online businesses, Spanish and Debate Honors Club, inner city mission trip this summer, Teens Need Teens club, lifeguard at cub scout camp and volunteers with Special Ones Ministry at church.

I suspect he will letter in Varsity soccer next two years and will continue with Debate team (although these activities conflict).

What are areas of improvement and/or weaknesses in his current resume? I know it is getting more and more competitive and I appreciate your honest feedback.

I'd say looks very fine. Keep doing what he's doing! Be and stay healthy. Build strength and endurance. Get in some swimming. Focus on some leadership opps. Pray hard. If you're in MD or VA, move to Montana. Investigate your family tree to discover any diversity potential. Apply to NASS come 01 Feb 2012.

He's doing all the right things. Given that a move to Montana is unlikely, know that many kids from MD and VA are admitted. Learned today that 26 candidates from one congressional district in NoVA were appointed to USMA this year. So being from a "popular" district isn't necessarily a negative.

I was told 17.

I should note that this MOC had 20 noms this year for USNA and USMA. That put additional qualified candidates in the queue, but obviously only directly resulted in one additional appointment.

For the new folks out there, this happens every few years. MOCs are permitted 5 mids to be at USNA at one time. Given that USNA is a 4-yr school, some years there will be 2 mids slotted to the MOC in the same year. When they graduate, that opens up the extra slot.

As for how USMA got 26 when only 20 were nominated -- most likely Pres noms.

There is no way of knowing -- other than asking your MOC -- whether he/she has the normal 10 slots (1 vacancy) or 20 (2 vacancies) in a particular year. Obviously, the extra slot with its resulting extra noms can help candidates but is one of the many things in this process over which you have no control.

Guys - thanks for the feedback. Big Sky country sounds nice but we are down south in alabama. Hopefully we will have a few open slots in a couple of year. I will pass on the advice on leadership ops and prayer for sure.
