I was wondering how I would look to the Citadel and VMI. I am a Junior and am applying at the end of the year in early June to the Citadel. I have a GPA of 3.00 - 3.01 (unweighted) at a college prep school, and SATs of around 1600 - 1700. I also have things like Eagle Scout, and Class President and Varsity Soccer with some letters. I was just wondering if there are any Knobs or Citadel Grads out there that know how I look to the Citadel.

Thanks,

Your ECs are great. I'm going to the Citadel starting this year, I can't really speak for the others in my freshman class but you can check collegeview.com to get an idea of the average SAT and GPA
Just my opinion but you probably will get into the Citadel.

Good luck

I can't tell you what your chances are for admission- but you can look at the profile of the class of 2014 at VMI and see where you stand:

Btexino: Don't let your son hear you say that kind of stuff- who will take care of you in your rapidly approaching old age?

But Bruno, I frequently wear my VMI “Rat in the Family” tee-shirt and even finally succumbed to putting a “VMI Dad” decal on the back window of my car. Surely those things count for something. Okay, how about, “GO KEYDOGS!” Is that better?

Re:VMI/Citadel Question

Unfortunately, getting into VMI will be tougher than getting into the Citadel, but being from Charleston SC, I can tell you it is a great town! The admission requirements at VMI are tougher and the military life at VMI is certainly more difficult than the Citadel--Lexington is also a gorgeous town. If you don't get into VMI, you can always go to the Citadel.
As a SC resident, I visited both schools and chose VMI because the accomplishments of VMI Alumni (from both a military and civilian view) and it's network were far more impressive to me. VMI also paid for my education--the endowment of VMI is about twice the size of the Citadel's and enables VMI to take care of student need... "no cadet in good standing leaves VMI because of money" is what a VMI officer told me nearly 20 years ago!!
When you look at the fine print, the schools are very different in certain regards... but both fine schools--good luck either way!

One thing that you have to remember about admissions at The Citadel is that if you are an in-state applicant, the admissions standards are considerably lower than those for out-of-state applicants. If you are an out-of-state applicant, as I was, you can't rely on published GPA and SAT/ACT scores that you'll find in the class profiles. You'll have to do quite a bit better than those averages.

This is why im going VMI. as for requirements. If your gpa drops (ie. senioritis) below a 3.0 then dont even apply. I have about a 3.4 but i had 1900 on my SATs also being an Eagle scout really helps. If you are serious about it go to an open house and check it out make sure to do early decision. Its non-comittal and it saves the hassle of dieing all through aApril as you wait.

And when it comes to money. I received all but 4500 a year so dont even worry about that.
