Hello everyone! So, I was looking over the Swim meet schedule for next year and noticed that the swim team competes the saturday of Parents Weekend. Does anyone know if Rats have visitation rights on Friday to meet up with parents? Thanks :)

Yes you will be able to go out with them after Parade up to taps on Friday and Saturday night after the football game or in your case after the swim meet.
BTW if you have not made Hotel reservations yet for Parents weekend - I would strongly suggest doing so very soon. Lexington is a small town and the Hotels will fill up completely at Parents weekend.

DH just made reservations for Oath Ceremony, Matriculation and Parent's weekend. We were able to get a hotel in Lexington for Matriculation and the Oath Ceremony, but Parent's weekend was a different story...closest available was in Raphine and that is a pricey B & B...Listen to Master Bruno..He KNOWS:biggrin:

Bruno: Quick Question: My son is an entering Rat this fall and is at STP right now. Will he be able to stay overnight with me at the hotel on either Friday or Saturday night on Parents' weekend? From your post it appears that will still be due at the Post by Taps. Thanks.

BTW, the hotels in Lexington are pretty much full. I am staying in Staunton up the road. Groan.

Quality Inn in Lexington still had rooms as of Friday night - that's the only halfway decent hotel in lexington that is still available. Next closest-Days Inn in Raphine is also still avail as of Friday.
No the rats will have to go back to barracks - I think they get extended taps. Til 0100 maybe but that's it.

Thanks very much, Bruno. You saved me some money and a lot of time!! I was able to make a reservation at the Quality Inn. Not my favorite place to stay, but it sure beats Staunton!

My parents stayed at the Holiday Inn Express there in Lex Vegas whenever they visited me during my rat year. By Parents' Weekend of my Third Class year, the hotel rates in town had increased greatly, and I was begging them to stay in Staunton anyway.

As a rat, I was thrilled to see my family, get off Post, SLEEP!, eat in a restaurant, and go to Wal-Mart.

As a Third, I was a little more high maintenance. I was thrilled to see my family, but they were my ticket to do all of the above in civvies, because Staunton is out of Rockbridge County. :thumb:

If you do venture down to Staunton, check out the Mill Street Grill. It became a bit of a tradition for my family, to include dinner before the Ring Figure Ball and the big family dinner right before graduation. Good times.

I don't understand. Bruno says that Rats (at least) have to go back to barracks that night. And you are right about the rates. Pretty steep! They ought to give VMI a share of the profits. Thanks for the recommendation re the Grill. Any recommendations for restaurants in lexington? We will be in Lexington on August 19 for the parents council reception pre-matriculation the next day.

What she means is that you can expect the Rats to basically go out to eat then straight to your hotel room where they will crash from about 7pm until around 1130 pm when you wind up heading back to barracks. The other thing that they will want to do is head to Walmart for nonperishable essentials that they can stuff in their food box. it's kind of funny to watch all of the Rats with parents trailing wandering thru Walmart as if it were Tiiffany's.

One more personal recommendation- the best/closest restaurant IMO to get away from the crowd in Lexington is a German restaurant (Edelweiss) about 20 miles north of Lexington south of Staunton off I81. Lot of food for the money and it's not the typical fare- Mom and Dad can have a good beer- while the Rat can pig out. Also be prepared to take several Rats with you- there will be a number whose parents won't be there- it's kind of an obligation to make sure that you snag an "orphaned" rat- or at least make sure there aren't any around when you go to dinner and "Wally World".

Thanks Bruno.
That's a hoot. Primal needs. Eat and Sleep and Wal Mart. Heck, I didn't know that there *was* a Wal Mart in Lexington.
