Laundry Question

It is my understanding that 4 degrees sort their laundry into a couple of bags and send them to the laundry. Their clothes get washed in the bags, in boiling water, no soap and then returned to them, still in the bag.
 
Laundry will be done for them during BCT and during freshmen year.

4* have their laundry done for them (assuming they remember to turn it in) through recognition.
 
is there an option to do it ourselves? boiling in water without soap seems insufficient..
 
I'm really amused. They don't boil the clothes. They use hypoallergenic soaps. Most of us didn't find it to be particularly great, but it was sufficient as a 4 dig. If you're really curious, here is the company it is sourced to unless someone else was able to underbid them recently:

Hornet, I too was laughing at the thread. However, I will give a pass for boiling, maybe they meant that to say at a high heat for sanitizing.

I am still chuckling visioning some women over cauldrons with big wooden spoons stirring cadets clothing!

The fact is they do the cadets laundry and it is up to the cadet to follow the procedure to get it done.

You can probably use the cadet laundromat, but you'll still have the approx. $50 taken from you paycheck each month for the laundry service.
 
"IMO", some of the smallest, most insignificant things about the academy to worry about...... yet, some people get so wrapped up about such things.

A few years ago, when my son had his appointment and was waiting for BCT, the traditional talking around the dinner table was going on. My wife started asking such questions as "Laundry". Other similar concerns came up. I tried to answer some of her/his questions. Finally, I said: "He isn't the first class to attend the academy. They've been doing this for quite a few years. Any possible concern/question you have about such things, have already been addressed and is taken care of". In other words; is it important how laundry is done? No. There's a procedure, and you'll adapt to that procedure. Same with similar questions. As long as you get your butt there, with your paperwork, and a few dollars on hand until you start getting paid, EVERYTHING ELSE will be told to you once you get there. You'll have 3000+ other cadets who have been there for 1-3 years. You'll learn what you can have/do and what you can't. This is the military. They have a procedure for everything. And being you can't have ANYTHING personal, pretty much, until BCT is over with, you'll know by then the procedures In other words, don't worry about it.
 
They sell coupons which cadets' parents (or anyone) can buy to help pay for their laundry. As I recall, it just "disappears" from the pay of the 4*s. My sons actually appreciated the quiet of the laundry room... good study time (or good nap time, more likely).
 
The "boiling issue" is accurate and may be more important to the female cadets than the guys. The boiling is rough on the sports bras and underwear that female cadets are required to bring with them. Thus, the statement elsewhere from a female cadet that sports bras and underwear are "gray", and sometimes ruined, by the end of Basic (the elastic in sports bras does not hold up well to boiling water and heated dryers). Female cadets are happy to replace, to the extent possible, those items following Recognition. By 3rd Class year, cadets are more likely (I understand) to do their laundry themselves -- at the laundry facilities available in Vandy and Sijan -- or maybe at their sponsor's house on a weekend.
 
USAFA currently uses Goodwill to do all Basic laundry. You must use that service during basic. Goodwill does use detergent, but it is unscented. Certain items are turned into Goodwill in mesh bags. These items are washed and dried while in the bags, thus the "grey and not super clean" aspect of Goodwill laundry.

During the rest of 4 degree year, USAFA takes $50 out of your paycheck each month for the Goodwill laundry service. It is entirely up to the cadet to follow the procedure to get laundry done by Goodwill (for my squad, we had to have our laundry correctly sorted, bagged, and labeled and in the laundry cart before minutes on Thursdays).

If you want to do your own laundry as a 4 degree, you can go to the laundry facilities in either Sijan or Vandenberg. Laundry you do yourself tends to be cleaner and smells better, but you do have to pay to use the washer and dryer and it's a hassle as a 4 degree.

I ended up doing my own laundry a lot this year, both because I liked the results better and because I never had the energy to sort laundry late on a Wednesday night :rolleyes:

As an upperclassmen, you have to do your own laundry. The Goodwill service is only for freshmen.
 
Your WHITE clothing will never be the same!!!! maybe Grey, maybe Blueish Grey...but it will never be white!!! haha.
Dont buy expensive in the beginning!!
