Okay so im biracial (half black/puerto rican) and i recently cut off my relaxed hair down to my natural curly roots because it was breaking off so badly. Its now an afro thats about 2-3 inches thick when its dried...would this be within regulation? Ive been reading about the air force actually having restrictions of black hair, like it must be relaxed or something..not exactly sure. I need to figure out what to do cuz im at a loss at how im gunna deal with my hair during bct...plus the back is extremely curly but the front has pretty much lost its curl from all the damage the relaxer has done to my hair shaft. Should i just get micro braids or something until my hair gets long enough to pull back again? Please help!!!!!!

It can be black as long as it's natural looking (Which i'm sure it is.) The maximum amount of bulk females can have hair is 3 inches.

You also have to be able to wear your flight cap and ABU cap without having any hair showing out the front of it, and it has to fit properly.

You might want to go with the braids. It will keep your hair nicer during PT and stuff. I don't know how long they stay in or anything (I have straight brown hair), but if they can last a reasonable amount of time, it would probably be more comfortable and easier to take care of.

Braids+short biracial hair= scary scary things. Biracial hair isn't like any other hair type. I understand your dilemma completely. (Caucasian/African American). I just got my cut the same way. As long as you keep it maintained and healthy, from what I understand, it SHOULDN'T be a problem.

Read what i said. Those are the air force regulations for womens hair. If you don't believe me, look up AFI 36-2903.

John: i believe you about regulations. But i am worried about how the flight caps might fit...Would we even wear those during bct???

Lightfoot: yeah i think you're right about that one! I dont think i'll be getting them cuz im scared they'll damage my new growth which i've worked so hard for! Lol

If i work really hard i can manage to get my hair into a teeny weeny ponytail when its wet..head bands are allowed right?? Because the front of my hair cant quite reach the ponytail yet..

Also how often do we get to shower during bct?? Just mornings? Nights? Or both? Cuz depending on how often i get to wet my hair will also help in me keeping it tamed...then again there are sinks in the rooms but i doubt we'll be going to the rooms for anything except sleeping..idk

You'll most likely shower once a day. Showers are pretty quick, get acustomed to taking like a 2 minute shower for during BCT.

You also aren't going to want to have "fly aways" like loose hairs or anything if you're doing the pony tail or putting your hair upish. So, you'll have to use hair products to slick your hair back that you can't fit in the pony tail. You can use all the hair products you want if you bring them, and you can also use hair bands, bobby pins, and all that as long as it matches your hair color.

Flight cap won't really be worn until the end of basic. But, like i said, it has to look professional and fit properly with your ABU cap as well, and you will be wearing that every day.

Braids would work and probably be easy to manage.

(I know too much about female hair regulations for a male.) :shake:

Lauren_44: why don't you contact the academy so you know for sure what you need to do. The parent club liason Barbara Guttierrez was extremely helpful about a few very specific quesitons i had and she responded quickly. Being a woman you might feel more comfortable talking to her:
barbara.gutierrez@usafa.edu is her email and her toll free phone is 877-268-3383

My advice is to get micros. I was apart of the preppie'11 class so i kinda know what to expect at BCT in June. You will be low crawling through mud, running around, and lots of other insane things. plus shower time is only about 2 mins or so so you wont have time to wash your hair nor will you be able to take care of it since you wont be allowed a blow dryer, grease, gel, or anything of that nature... so braid it is the best way to go. my hair will be braided for basic :)

How do you plan on maintaining them after basic? I have no clue what i'd do since i've never had anything put in my hair before
