Service Academy Exchange Program

Typically during the 2nd class year cadets can apply for a one semester exchange to another military service academy. My DD is going to exchange this Fall at USAFA and is looking forward to the experience. She has already been invited to participate with the AFA Triathlon Club and to keep her swimming skills up by practicing with their swim team. She related to us everyone she has met from Air Force has been very welcoming to her about her upcoming exchange. As for selection, one concern is that the exchange must fit into the academic schedule of classes so as not to delay graduation. If you tested out of (validated) classes early on and have open elective slots as an upperclassman then it is easier to fit an exchange semester into your academic program. I would assume keeping your grades up and your nose clean also is important in the selection process.
So if I were to go on exchange my 2/c year would I still be able to play a sport with the other service academy's team?Sports Team Answer
I’m pretty certain the answer is NO to competing at another Academy (probably against NCAA rules). In some sports the CGA coach may be able to get you a practice slot with the team. Our DS did so at USNA, but I'm sure it depends on the sport (In swimming and diving it was relatively easy). Many of the CGA coaches are understanding and will allow you to compete at CGA without having attended all of the practices or having been there through the full season due to an exchange. You can also arrange which semester you go on exchange so it has minimal impact on a sport, as long as it works academically.
There are only about 4 2/C cadets away at each of the other academies each semester, so slightly under 10% of the cadets get to do this. The cadets seem to enjoy the experience, and for most I believe it reinforces their original decision to join the Coast Guard.
As mentioned in the first response you received, performing at a high level and staying out of trouble are pretty certain to be requirements for selection to the exchange program.

My classmates were happy to return to CGA after their exchange, but enjoyed their time at different academies.
There was a girl from USNA who joined the Coast Guard after graduating from USNA....I used to see her at the Coast Guard Academy.

A kid from USNA roomed with my son during his exchange visit. He ended up joining the Coast Guard upon graduation!
Why do you think USNA limits the exchange program to four midshipmen per semester? They all want to be in the Coast Guard (or Air Force...not the Army, too brainwashed with all that "Beat Army!" stuff) once they see what life is like outside the Navy!

I was on the USS Iwo Jima off of Greece for a DOD program. The program is a civilian outreach program called the Joint Civilian Orientation Conference (jcoc.dod.mil). While aboard IWO JIMA we met with Marines and sailors. A couple of USMC Cobra pilots called me over to ask how to enter the Coast Guard Direct Commission Aviator (DCA) program.
I always thought that was interesting.
