CGO has provided these AVERAGE scores for the CFA to BGOs to publicize. CGO advises there are minimum scores for each event that are NOT published. Max scores are available on the usna.edu website.

1 MILE RUN (min:sec) 6:40
CRUNCHES 80
PUSH-UPS 58
PULL-UPS 11
B-BALL THROW(ft) 67
SHUTTLE RUN (sec) 8.9

FEMALE

1 MILE RUN (min:sec) 7:45
CRUNCHES 74
PUSH-UPS 37
PULL-UPS 1 (or 54-sec arm hang)
B-BALL THROW (ft) 39
SHUTTLE RUN (sec) 9.8

usna1985,

Wow! I'd found the old flexed arm hang average to be 19.8 seconds. 54 seconds seems like a HUGE average increase.

I can only tell you that these are averages provided by CGO, so they are "official." I would assume that an average represents a passing score. However, I do not know the group for which the averages apply (admitted applicants, all applicants, etc.).

For women, you should REALLY try to do a single pull-up. For those applying for 2014, start now; there is zero reason you shouldn't be able to do at least one by the fall.

If I have already submitted my CFA scores do you know approximately when my BGO will notify me if I did not pass?

Your BGO does not get your CFA scores nor does he/she know if you have passed. Privacy reasons. CGO will notify you if you have not passed. Not sure when they do this. If you pass, you will not be notified.

This is an old post but do you guys think the averages will really change?

Generations ago, young people were more fit as a whole.

Yet again, more people are applying to the academies and probably more motivated to get fit (at least I would assume)?

No idea if they've changed. USNA hasn't provided updated numbers to BGOs.

i assume you are intimidated by the scores for NASS. my DD just finished up session 1 and said that a lot of attendees who could not meet minimum scores, esp. on the run. her assumption is that they will have to retake the test within the year.

these scores are attainable with hard work. don't let them intimidate you. after you take it at NASS and are not happy w/your scores, you will know what you have to work on before you take it again. but if you go to NASS prepared and score well, you will be fortunate enough to have the CFA behind you.

enjoy the journey!

One of my twins went to NASS (back in 2008) and the other didn't. But the one who went did his CFA at the academy and did only two pull-ups. He ultimately got an LOA.

My other son did the CFA through his high school baseball coach who, I'm sure, was far more liberal in his interpretation of what constituted a valid pull-up.

He got an LOA, also.

So, I know that the minimum for pull-ups must be pretty darn low.

Do they tell the kids if they passed if they take it at NASS? My son texted me his scores and they were:

75 push ups
15 pull ups
6:10 mile
59 ft bb throw
8.5 s shuttle run
80 sit ups

I assume this is passing even though the throw is low. He didn't say whether he passed it or not.

My kid leaves for NASS on Saturday. He is stocky and scores well on pull ups, sit ups, push ups, basketball throw. Even the shuttle.

But his best mile is 7:20. He will not be able to get to 6 minutes. How will this play?

Nice... I actually fell below average on the shuttle run for 0.1 seconds  haha!

Those are GREAT scores... Not sure about the basketball throw though.

Just remind him that nothing matters after the finish line.

What I mean is... when I practiced, I didn't push myself to the top because, well, "I had to get home", "I had to take a shower and go to Church"... I had n stupid reasons.

During USMA SLS, I just decided: "Okay. I have done well on everything so far. I can't waste this mile run. Nothing matters anymore: it's this run, and this run only, in my head".

(Disgusting or not, here it goes: throwing up during the race should not stop you. I did that several times (I know, yuk, right?), and I did not waste any more than 1 or 2 seconds at each situation. Do NOT let the psychological implications get into his head!)

At 6:51, I got 3rd best time in my squad. The 1st and 2nd placed were Track/XC runners.

I am a Goalkeeper. I don't regularly run. My legs were burning in the end, and I was happy because I was thinking "Dang, now I REALLY gave 112%".

Honor66 my DS is in the same boat. Plays center on the football team, and does not usually run long distance. He leaves for NASS Saturday also. The mile he ran at Air Force last week was 7:25. I am hoping he can improve that next week.

He said he passed. He's really really fit but who does stuff like the bb throw in real life?

I think our sons must have been at AFA together. Is your son used to the altitude at AFA? My son is a linebacker so he runs quite a bit. Hi run time was lower at AFA than USNA. We are from Fl and I am sure the altitude affected him.

Remember that the CFA is a test that all 3 SAs that use it (USNA, USAFA, USMA) all agreed to. Thus, certain elements are more important than others at the different SAs. USNA focuses on pushups, crunches, and mile. They really don't care about the Bball throw. As they told the BGOs, "no one has ever been denied an appointment b/c they couldn't throw a basketball."

I believe USMA wanted the BBall throw -- someone suggested that it was b/c you need to throw grenades, but that may just be folklore:smile:

Actually, 4 of them (USMA, USNA, USAFA, USMMA) use it.

USCGA is the only one who doesn't, they use a different 3-event test known as PFE.
