Girl Scout Gold Award Project
A Step Into History
Over 400 veterans are interred at Montgomery Cemetery in Norristown, PA; a majority of them having served in the Civil War. Grand Army of the Republic, Zook Post #11 is a burial plot in the cemetery for 34 Civil War veterans. The post was named in honor of Brigadier Gen. Samuel K. Zook, who was fatally wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg.
The Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) was a fraternal organization created after the Civil War by Union Army veterans, first for camaraderie and later political power. The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW) is the modern day GAR. Members of the GAR founded federal holidays, i.e. Memorial Day, and were influential in the voting rights of black veterans.
For my Girl Scout Gold Award Project, I will denote the plot by designing and erecting a historical marker containing the history and official insignia of the GAR. Visitors to the cemetery will benefit by reading the sign and learning about the Civil War generals who are buried in Zook Post #11. My goal is to encourage tourists, historians, and local members of the community to acquire knowledge and appreciation of the historic value of Montgomery Cemetery; and to honor the GAR veterans who helped shape our country.
