ROTC v. NROTC

Which of the two has more competition to get a, NROTC or ROTC scholorship. Just intrested in finding out percentages and what not. Also is it the same requirments for both scholorships.

Navy ROTC vs Army ROTC?

Navy ROTC and Air Force ROTC are very selective, some say Navy is the most selective.
Each branch has their own specific requirements for a ROTC scholarship.

Both Navy ROTC and Air Force ROTC have strong preference for STEM majors.
Marines do very few ROTC scholarships so it is also tough.
Army offers the most ROTC scholarships, and is the least selective,
Army usually does not care what your degree is.
(Nursing scholarships being an obvious exception)

With current budget cuts, all ROTC scholarships are becoming increasing competitive.

The profile of this year's scholarship winners shows that;

Average high school grade-point average was 3.5
Mean college board test score was 1186 SAT / 26 ACT
96 percent were in the top 50 percent of their classes
74 percent were in the top 25 percent of their classes
39 percent were in the top 5 percent of their classes
77 percent were varsity-letter winners
53 percent were varsity team captains
41 percent were National Honor Society members
28 percent took part in Junior ROTC
17 percent were involved in Scouting
12 percent were student-body or senior-class presidents
34 percent held other class offices
8 percent were club presidents

Anyone have any type of similar stats for AFROTC or NROTC?

AFROTC AVGS

Type 1 : 1484 SAT/31.75 ACT 3.88 GPA
Type 2: 1328 SAT/30.8 ACT 3.88 GPA
Type 7: 1238 SAT/27.8 ACT 3.77 GPA

Understand that 5% go to Type 1. 10% go to Type 2, and 85% go to Type 7.

One thing to realize is that not only will there be a huge budget cut for DOD, but also the SA's are reducing their incoming class size, thus many of the candidates that get the TWE from them will take the scholarship which will increase the competition from a stat pov. If you look at the AF Type1 stats they are around the same as the AFA.

AFROTC website indicates approximately 20% of scholarships are type 2. The type 1 average test scores actually exceed the class of 2014 AFA scores by quite a bit (SAT ~ 1300, ACT ~30). A type 1 is pretty difficult to get.

gojack: You post some fantastic statistics for a lot of ROTC stuff. How do you find all of this information? My searching skills must be lacking because you make it seem easy. Thanks. Greatly appreciate your contribution.

It should also be noted that AFROTC looks at the SAT/ACT scores differently than the USAFA. USAFA will superscore the scores taking the best score in each section from multiple exams. USAFA also accepts scores until the application closes (I think January 31). AFROTC does not superscore taking only the composite score in the case of the ACT. AFROTC also accepts scores only until Dec 1. My DS ended up with a 31 on the ACT for USAFA but only a 29 for AFROTC because of the differences.

Actually Packer on their website under the FAQs states only 10%. It use to be 20%, but I think because so many cadets are now converting Type 7 into a 3yr Type 2, they may have decided to reduce the amount of 4 yr Type 2s given out. They have a fiscal budget that they must maintain.

I agree the stats have gone up over the past couple yrs. I would also assume that because the AFA drastically reduced their incoming cadet class from 1600-1700 to @1350, the stats increased for 2015. I have stated many times even my DS who is scholarship class of 12, will tell you he believes he wouldn't have received a scholarship now, he had a 1390 (SAT), 33 or 34 ACT (can't remember).

As gojack earlier stated it is not just about stats. Those EC's are important too. The system is called the Whole Candidate Score. 60% of that score is the Par (stats), 20% are ECs, 20 % are recs and PFT.

You can have a perfect SAT, perfect gpa, valedictorian, but if you are only book smart your chances of getting a scholarship greatly diminish. That is why you see such a high % of varsity winners, NHS members, and 1 in 3 held student govt positions.

Xposted with Blackbird, but he is right to realize that those stats are even more impressive because they do not superscore. However, if you take both the ACT and SAT, they will convert the ACT to an SAT score, which ever is higher will be used for the PAR. This is why it is to your best advantage to take both. DS had a higher ACT score so they used that for him.

One other fact regarding the Types. Tech majors and foreign languages are their favorites. If your major is non-tech, your stats really have to be up there. For a Type 1, only 5% of that 5% go to non-tech. Think about it statistically out of 1000 candidates, 50 will get Type 1. 2-3 will go to non-tech majors. It happens, but as I have stated you need to really shine for them to give a non-tech over tech. The bulk of non-tech scholarship recipients come out of the Type 7, but again, the bulk of Type 7 go to tech majors. It is just more than 5% come from this pool.

Well it says both on their website. I guess you can take your pick but I would bet on the lower number in the current environment. One way or the other receiving one is quite an accomplishment.

How many Army ROTC?

How many Navy ROTC?

Just guessing, but I would guess between 700-1000.

I am just doing this from a statistical pov. I believe there are about 10K in ROTC at any given time or @2500 per yr group on avg. Take 25-30% and that would get you to the 700 number.

The bigger question should be how many apply. Again, just guessing, but I would assume the number would be in the 5K range. Most candidates for an SA will apply ROTC as plan B, but that is not true for ROTC candidates. So if you remove the SA appointees (@1300), and add the 2500 yr group you will get @4K, now add those who apply for multiple ROTC scholarships, and those who just wanted the free education, you probably will get to the 5K range. Additionally, C100 yr is always the big yr because they will try for an ICS as a C200, but if they don't get it they may drop ROTC.

Finally that would also put ROTC on the same statistical % as the SA, about 15% out of the pool win the scholarship.

I would assume both AROTC and NROTC give out more because they are larger in size than the AF. However, from a statistical perspective, since NROTC is known to be the most competitive, I would say their % is lower than AF. Army probably has the highest % of awards.

That being stated, everyone believes because of the budget issues, what happened last yr should not be seen as a predictor for this yr. When Mullen and Gates stated everything is on the table regarding cuts including pay and bennies, people realized very quickly ROTC was also on the chopping block. Plus, the fact that both AFA and USNA have already stated they will not request a waiver for cadet size, it was IMPO their way of saying they saw the writing on the wall regarding being hit from a budgetary position.

All supposition, because I have never seen actual numbers, just tidbits of how many are in, how many are on scholarship.

I have never found an announcement for stats on other services like the Army releases annually. I assume that the Army likes to brag about its numbers, because it hands out the largest number of scholarships, and other services would prefer not to be compared directly. (maybe?) Navy seems to release almost no information on Navy ROTC.

Thank you everyone for such great STATS! I enjoyed reading all of them. I myself was looking into Nrotc either Navy or Marine Option. I have to decide mainly when my SAT scores come in, then i fill ou the application and take the PT test. After already 3 years of working hard in highschoool I really hope i'll get a scholorship and make my family proud. I love the help all you give thanks alot i appreciate it. God Bless!
