Do Cadets still get paid the stipend during the summer? Also I know the scholarship isn't activated until 90 days after you start school, does that mean I will be reimbursed for those 3 months?

Thanks,

Zach

I'll speak for AROTC and wait for an AFROTC expert to comment on that.

We don't get paid during summer unless you're training. You will also be paid for as long as you are contracted, they will make up for the 90 days.

As a 100 and 200 you will not be paid during the summer unless on orders.

The stipend will be paid retro-actively. Usually in Oct you will get several payments....back pay, current pay and book stipend. They will come in at different times. You also will get paid on the 1st and the 15th for your monthly stipends.

Have to ask why you are assuming it won't activate for 90 days? Are you starting school July 1st? I ask this because scholarship money usually comes in @ Oct 1st. Granted maybe they said it can take up to 90 days, but for DS it usually was within 6 weeks of school starting.

Make sure you stay on the ball regarding the pay, because occassionally there are paperwork issues that delay the reimbursement. Many times it comes down to numerical error during inputting...i.e. number imposed for SS, DOB or checking account. Sometimes it can also be a DodMERB issue where you are not cleared.

First lesson in the military, never assume anything. Always be informed. If everyone else is getting their stipend, and you are not, don't wait forever to work the situation, give it a few days, maybe a week or two, but after that start talking to your det. It is much harder to get months of back pay than it is to get a month of back pay.

The one that has always taken the longest to get reimbursed was books, that usually took about 8-10 weeks.

Thanks for the quick responses. So we are required to pay for our own books and then we are reimbursed or does the university usually do a deferred payment?

Thanks,

Zach

Unless you can make it through the first couple of months of classes without books.....you pay for your own books and then wait patiently for your AFROTC book stipend.

Oh, so I wasn't supposed to spend all my book money on nerf guns?
whoops. Glad I only spent a little of the extra...

Depending upon your school, books may or may not be billable to your bursar account. If they are billable to your bursar account, you may be able to float the balance until your stipend is paid. The book allowance can be paid to your bursar account depending on how your unit pays your book allowance - most actually deposit it to the same bank account that your stipend goes to, so you pay for your books up front and save that first book stipend check for next term's books.

I would be prepared to pay for your first term's books upfront. If you are that tight on money, you might be well advised to start working on that situation now.

Don't buy books until atleast after the first week. Unless it's a book the teacher has said you will need for the first day or so. You will end up not using half your books and wasting money. Your first semester you will probably have to buy the books up front (if you shop smart, you can spend less than $200 easy) and be reimbursed.

Again thank you for the responses. This may not be the place for this question, but, is it possible to rent textbooks and then return them. If so, is that cheaper?

I think Chegg (sp?) rents books. However some profs insist on the latest version which isn't always available. I think renting is usually cheaper than buying then reselling.

The campus bookstore at my university has some books for rent. I've used it for some books and found it to be cheaper. You just have to look around. A large number of students are starting to find sites online that sell and rent books for very cheap. I'd encourage anyone to look into this.

My daughter has found that buying text books on Amazon is much cheaper than the campus bookstore. She buys every book she can that way and only buys books that Amazon does not carry at the bookstore. I have seen some of the books she needed to buy are 25% to 50% of the price at the bookstore.

I’m confused, so do Juniors and Seniors get the monthly stipend in the summer?

I dont believe any ROTC program pays stipends for the summer. I assume back pay in Oct means the preceding September and perhaps part of August.
