Hi everyone,

I will be a re-applicant for USNA. Next year I will be a college freshman at West Virginia University. I was wondering if anyone knew if/how it's possible to become a WV resident. The reason I am wondering is because the competition for nominations down there is far less competitive than in my current state.

I hope you are referring to the number of candidates who apply from WV and not their overall competitiveness.

:wink::rolleyes::shake: Prbly both. :thumb:

Anyone know how many HSs there are in WV named after the great late Sen. Byrd?
A. Both of 'em
B. All of 'em
C. When did they build a high school thar?
D. All of the above

Jennifer Garner's from the mountain state! Hot Rod Hundley and Jerry West, too!

Seriously, WV just might be the exception being a monumentally negative drane state, but most watch this one like a hawk and disable students from citizenship. Not for your purposes, but rather to get 3 ( or in WV, maybe 5 or 6) years of in-state tuition.:confused::rolleyes:

Sorry ... could not resist.:biggrin:

Seriously, why the degrading slam on West Virginia?
Or was it because your rant had made no sense at at... Whistle Pig.

As someone with relatives who are from West Virginia, it is a great state with an exceptional engineering program at WVU. The people of WV are some of the kindest, most welcoming citizens. If you have any questions please PM me.
Here is a link for residency requirements for WVU:

Becoming a resident would mean all sorts of changes for you, especially if mom and dad are paying the bills. :eek:

WV is a great place, and WVU has more Rhodes Scholars than USNA, Penn State, Pitt combined. As for the people, they are just like people everyplace on the planet. Now, the culture? That's a very different story and merits some real analysis. It's a brutally poor place as Senator Byrd knew and addressed, becoming the prince of pork enroute. I-68 is one of the best interstate hiways in the country. Wonder why it goes from DC to Morgantown? Not because of traffic flow beyond his limo, perhaps.

Making light of the state's shortcomings is just that. Lighten up. This is silly, but the fact that anyones feel any need to do anything but chuckle about this very unique state's many facets and assets is revealing. Do Pittsburghers resent being called "yinzers"? Heck, Massachusetts is actually PROUD of what Teddy Kennedy did. Mississisppians wouldn't trade a thang with Michiganders. btw, having worked in and around WVU, I've honestly never heard it recognized either in-state or out as having an "exceptional engineering program." Can you tell us more about that one and some specifics? Which fields?

I'll stick with my POV. This is silly. Starting with the original question.

Btw, there was another point that was pondered, hoping the OP's question referred to the number and not the quality of candidates. Beyond the 2 senatorial nomination numbers, it would seem the implicit answer would be "quality." MOCs generally have about the same number of constituents.

:oops::tongue:
...WVU has more Rhodes Scholars than USNA, Penn State, Pitt combined...

btw, in case you're wondering if this is accurate or otherwise? It's not.:thumbdown::rolleyes:

IN FACT and TRUTH!
USNA = 46
WVU = 25
Pitt = 6
Penn State = 2

GO NAVY!:thumb: :tank:Beat Harvard! :jump1:

And lest you're wondering ...:confused::confused1:

Harvard has had just a hair or 3 below 350. Seems privilege has its rank ...:rolleyes::thumbdown::tongue::hammer::blowup:

WV Residency

Like most states, WV does not allow full time students to gain residency status. You have to work and pay taxes, I believe for a year. This is similar to Ohio and PA as far as I know.

We had six great kids, five men and one woman, enter into the 2015 USNA class from WV and I had the honor of meeting their parents. They will certainly make us all proud!
