Nomination Question

can your mailing address be different than your nomination address.

My mailing address is currently at my moms house because its a lot closer to school and i stop by to get my mail everyday. My dads house is a lot further away but Im applying for a nomination in his district. Is it alright if my address under the usma portal is my mothers house or does it have to be my fathers house.

This could be a question generator. You can only apply for a nomination from "your" congressman. That is the MOC where you live.

Which address is your "legal" address? That would determine which district you are from and which MOC you would apply to.

If you live with your mom and go to school in your mom's district, you may have problems applying to your dad's district. Joint custody may be your savior here. If your mom is your legal custodian, you may not be able to apply in your dad's district.

With my son, his mother and I had joint custody but he lived with me and went to school in my district. He received a nomination from his mom's district. Not sure if it was legal or not. Up until graduation day, every time things weren't going his way, he threatened to turn himself in as an improper nomination.

Check with your MOCs. They are better equipped to serve you.

Ah, another opportunity for KP. There you can apply not only to both of your senators but to ALL representatives in the state! Not just the one in your own district. If you want a nom bad enough for KP you should be able to get it. At least that is my understanding.

there is no custody agreement. I pretty much spend time equally at each house. Ive got a room at both houses. I was just curious because if I could make the mailing address my mothers house because it would be a lot easier to pick up my mail every day as its on the way to my dads house.

But i guess another related questions would be if the academies check that your congressional nom is from the rep in your district or if it is the reps duty to nominate people in their district. If it was the reps duty, then i could just make the address my moms because i guess the academy wouldnt really care where the nom came from?

I found an information sheet from Congressman Long (MO). It says that if your parents are divorced that YOU need to decide which Congressional district to apply from but that you can only apply from a single district.

If I had to guess, I would think you are 18 or over since you say there is no custody agreement. In that case, if you are 18+, where are you registered to vote/pay your taxes? That would be your legal residence. If that isn't the case, then who claims you as a dependant on their taxes? Wouldn't that determine your legal residence--same as that parent? I would think it would be OK to set up both a legal address and a mailing address with a service academy (easiest way to get an accurate answer--call them), as many college students apply for SA's but may want some/all of the mail to come to their dorm room/apartment and not their legal home address just for ease of completing paperwork on a timely basis. Just be careful--if you use 2 different addresses (Mom's and Dad's) without clarifying it with someone at the SA, a question may arise and you don't want it to be after you've received a nomination in possibly the wrong district. Lynpar says that USMA allows you to apply for a congressional nomination from anyone in your state, but I would verify that first just in case. It just seems that each congressman/woman would get inundated with nom applications from all over but end up picking someone in their own district (want to keep their own consituents happy!). I know that for the AFA, you can only apply for a congressional nom within your own legal district, plus the senators in your state, VP, etc.

@ blackbird, your are right on the money. My local admissions rep told me I had to decide. I cant play both sides of the fence. I've chosen my dads district but its FAR less competitive.

For the record though, Im 17 years old and about to be a senior in hs. THeres no custody agreement because it was a friendly separation. Also, my dad's profession requires irregular hours and thus and agreement would be hard to maintain. I just come and go to each house as I please. If i feel like spending a couple days at my moms house, I'll do it. Same thing for my dads house.
