We are at Annapolis now, My son should report at 8:00 tomorrow However, this afternoon we went to Navy Federal credit Union at the Annapolis Mall and then he left all his paper package there.Offcoure, most of the required documents had been sent to USNA back in June.

What should we do? go ahead to report without the permit to report letter or wait for the bank open and try to recover the lost papers. The bank will not open until 9:00AM

Surrender now...candidate SHOULD report as ordered at 0800. Period. Son should let those checking him in know what has transpired and what he is doing to solve the problem.
Support staff (parent) should be at NFCU waiting at 0900 and retrieve paperwork.
Poor kid...not what he needs hours before I-Day. All will work out in the end. I am confident he won't be turned away...but may get a bit of abuse for the slip up in forgetting his packet. The academy does understand these kids are a bundle of nerves!
PS: Please report back to us in a few days to let us know what happens; take a deep breath and get a good night's sleep.

I'd do just the opposite. Wait until 9, get the package, and report. Then if necessary, explain if he's asked why he's late. (I'm betting his first day's pay none will ask. This is a non-issue, i.e. report time.

Look at it another way. IF he were there at 0700 for an 0800 report time? They'd welcome him w/ open arms, no questions asked.

Or another scenario ... he leaves his packet in the car. Would he go back over to the parking lot to get it? Of course.

I'd not want to go thru that door w/o my orders. Intantaneous idiot ID that could well be his burden for the remainder ...

This is a non-issue.

Thanks. Yes, I will do that.

But what should I do with his paper if I can recover it ? He already ...gone by the time I get back from the bank

And now you've IDed one more issue in why NOT to enter that process absent his paperwork. The ship will not sail w/o him.

What happen if the cleaner lady at the bank throw away the package, then we are late and no paper either

That's right.

I'll lay you 10-1 it's there. They've seen this one before. They'll NOT throw the packet away.

Do what you will. I've told you what and why I'd do it. Risk (low to none) taking heat when you walk in the door vs. taking the heat all summer? This one's a no brainer, imo.

One more perspective: The lad is supposed to report with those orders. Right? Right. The lad is supposed to report at a time. Right? Right.

Either way, he's failed to follow orders. Imo, there is more risk of heat and harassment going thru the line absent those papers vs. going thru one person who'll not say boo about it, going in the door.

This is the military. If he is told to report at 0800, he reports at 0800. He explains his situation, telling them that dad is attempting to retrieve the paperwork. If they want him to continue processing, they will tell him to do so. If they want him to wait til the paperwork arrives, they will tell him.

My question: Can he report without his PTR letter ?

I afraid the cleaning lady already threw it in the trash can .

Of course. Why do you think a "cleaning lady" would do that ... on the Yard of USNA when every incoming Plebe, virtually, entered that office with the same? It will be there. It's a banking office!

You've asked. You've gotten 2 disparate opinions. Now you're speculating about an unlikely circumstance you've no clue about.

Make a decision and go with it. He'll survive and will not be dishonorably discharged before he's ever inducted. Quit worrying tonite. You're doing him no service.

I'm so sorry this stress has been added to your experience. If it were me, I'd be at the doors to NFCU now to see if a cleaning crew is present and beg them to look for it. If not, be there at their door by 8am, you just know people have to show up to open, unlock, etc...... and explain the situation. Also agree with Mongo, send Plebe To Be at ordered time with explanation ready, paperwork to follow. Additionally, advice for other families, utilize the NFCU branch on the Yard in case something similar happens, at least you're already THERE! Again, I am very sorry this happened.

WP- they left it at the Jennifer Road branch, not the one adjacent to Bancroft.

I'm going to add to the report when told faction. This isn't the Mickey Mouse club where one gets to show up when they want. Report as ordered, explain the situation and go forward with their directions.

You can also try the other options mentioned of going to the branch to see if there is a cleaning group there or showing up early to see when the manager or whoever shows before work.

Not being there when told is akin to missing a ship's movement in the Navy. Not a good thing. You are better off showing up without the paperwork then not showing. Papers get lost, luggage gets lost, etc etc it has happened before, they will know what to do when he shows.

Here is my final :

1. He will report at exact 8:00 .
2. If they take him without PTR letter then I really don't have to worry about going back to the bank, since the paper will be no needed anyway.
3. If they tell him to wait for the recovered PTR then he will wait for me. Then:
3a: He will be late with the recovered doc. This is better
3b: He will be late without the recovered doc since someone discard it as a trash
3c: If 3b happen, then USNA HAS to take him LATE and NO PTR

I don't even think they asked for my PTR paper when I walked in Alumni. I recall just a name (and maybe a picture ID). You won't be able to drive onto the Yard without the PTR, though.

I really wouldn't stress over it.

yes, report as ordered and deal w/ the repercussions. soon you're son will learn the following phrase common and probably never forgotten by those who have gone before him...

"To be early is to be on time, to be on time is to be late, and to be late is to be forgotten. Time, tide, and formation wait for NO MAN."

a ship will get underway w/o you trust me (unless you're like the CO or something)

best of luck and try to get some sleep

I think you have a good plan here. I'm glad to see our resident BGOs, grads and staff were able to assist you. Let us know how it goes, but I think you should be all set.

I'd take Whistle Pig's advice. They don't even look at the report times.

Here is my report:

1.Dropped future MID and his sister at stadium at 6:30 AM. Drove back to the bank and camping at parking lot
2. Son and his sister reported to admission officer about the accident. the LT told them to wait for calling time, report as normal, just take a little longer time to fill out the missing papers
3. At 8:23 the bank manager arrived, I stopped her at the door, explain the situation, she unlocked the door, reset the alarm, turned on the light, and it is right there, on the receptionist desk, the BFE.
4 Call his sister at the yard, he IS still there, waiting for call time.
5. Back to the stadium, jumped into the ready to leave bus, get to the yard at 8:42, the future MID is STILL there. gave to him the BFE and the hug,
6. At around 8:50, they called for every body from 8:30 and earlier to line up.
7. Kiss the DS good buy and crying a little bit.

Thanks everyone for everything
