Swab summer question

Does anyone know when the Swabs will be allowed to make a call home?

Mystic Flag ceremony....7/23

Send the phone a week or so ahead of time. The cadre will get it charged up and ready for that first call home.

VA Parent,

Shellz answered your question, but consider joining the Coast Guard Academy's Parents Association 2015 Message List.

It has info about cell phones and much, much more. It will be a lifeline for you while your son/daughter is at the Academy, especially during Swab Summer.

Not the case for every class. 2013 Swabs were IT'ed for using cell phones at Mystic. The rules/policies can change. Sempre Gumby - Always Flexible.

Agree, Semper Gumby is in order. No two Flag Days are the same, nor are the rules the same. The cadre set the protocol for the day and your swabs must follow their directives or face not such great things...both for themselves, but often at the expense of their company mates.
However, during the past 6 swab summers swabs were able to make calls home after they were released for a very brief liberty period in the afternoon (swabs leave Mystic and are transported back to CGA for lunch and room/uniform inspection). I repeat, a very brief liberty period.
Those who were in transit to Eagle were at some point permitted to make phone calls, but once again, this will be determined by the current cadre. It's just a good idea to have your phone close by on June 23rd! :thumb:
The Coast Guard Academy Moms & Dads!!!! is also a great source of information.

Hmmm......I stand corrected. But, I will say this, we got a call, and no reports of IT-ing.

The good news is, many wonderful parents of local swabs will be there. They often will loan out their phones for swabs to call home! In your next letter, just tell your swab to be on the lookout for kind looking parents of their new classmates! Hint, hint...they are everywhere!
