What should I do?

I was cast in my school's spring drama production. Also, I wrote a play and performed a different play for my school's drama festival, which had to be written, performed, practiced, and directed within 24 hours of receiving the topic for the play. I did not participate in my school's athletic program in my freshman year, as I was focusing on my academics during the transition from a small Catholic middle school to a rigorous college preparatory school. I plan on playing three sports in my sophomore year (Cross Country/Wrestling, Swimming, or Basketball/Lacrosse). However, by playing sports in my sophomore year, I would not be able to participate in my school's fall or spring drama productions. I would still be able to participate in the annual drama festival, though. My options are the following (for the sports, assume that I have no experience in any of them and for the drama productions, assume the fall and spring productions are equal and that I will still be participating in the drama festival):

- Participate in the Fall and Spring Drama Productions, Play a Winter Sport (Wrestling, Swimming, or Basketball)

- Participate in the Fall Drama Production, Play a Winter Sport (Wrestling or Basketball) and a Spring Sport (Lacrosse)

- Participate in the Spring Drama Production, Play a Fall Sport (Cross Country) and a Winter Sport (Wrestling, Swimming, or Basketball)

- Do Not Participate in the Drama Productions, Play a Fall Sport (Cross Country), a Winter Sport (Wrestling, Swimming, or Basketball), and a Spring Sport (Lacrosse)

Assuming I do everything else right (academically, extracurricular activities, etc.), out of these four options, which one would look better for nomination and admission to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy?

Also, for the Winter Sport, can someone please help me decide between Wrestling, Swimming, and Basketball? Which would the Academy rather see excellence in? The only one I've had experience on a team would be Basketball (but it was only for my Catholic middle school, and I wasn't very good).

1. There are no nominations used in any part of the USCGA admissions process.
2. Do what you enjoy.
3. Stop trying to "game the system" by attempting to predict how the CCEB will "view" different sports.

And when you write your admissions essays, you better make sure you don't just "cut and paste" your reasons for wanting to attend the US Coast Guard Academy on your US Military Academy application, telling the West Point board how much you want to be a Coast Guard officer. It happens every year, especially with those trying to "figure out the system" and predict their chances by structuring an academic and EC profile to "fit" into what they THINK the admissions board is looking for.

Looking back, I'll probably play a Fall Sport (Cross Country) and a Winter Sport (Basketball or Wrestling). I'll participate in the Spring Drama Production and the School Drama Festival, as I did this year. Although Basketball is the only sport I have team experience in, the only problem is that I am not nearly as good as the varsity, or even some of the junior varsity, basketball players, and therefore, I would probably not be given any leadership roles, such as captain or co-captain. Wrestling is a much smaller team, so there would be a better chance for me to become captain/co-captain. Can someone please help me decide which one would be a better fit for me?

No. No one can answer that question.

In addition to that advice, don't repost the EXACT same question on every thread here. Doing the right things for one academy will likely be the right thing for other service academies.

You're trying to plan your life to get into an academy...so let me head off some questions and answer some others.

- Take hard classes and do well. If you don't do well, you won't get in.
- Be physically active and fill leadership positions.
- Be active in your community.
- Don't break laws.
- Don't stop having fun. You have 4 years in high school to enjoy yourself. Do what you need to do to be a good candidate, but a majority of people who apply to a service academy are not accepted. Do you want to spend 4 years doing things you hate, but think will look good?

No one here knows you. No one can say what best fits you.

Okay. So, I have narrowed it down to two options:

- Participate in the Fall and Spring Drama Productions, Play a Winter Sport (Wrestling)

- Participate in the Spring Drama Production, Play a Fall Sport (Cross Country) and a Winter Sport (Wrestling)

Between these two, can someone please help me make a decision?

Just do what makes you happy!!! There is no right or wrong choice here.

You are obviously trying to game the system, so I'll help you.

Don't participate in either drama production and instead enroll in a calculus class at your local community college.

No. No one can help you make a decision.

I'm beginning to think Rubio1996 is a troll.

Maybe not a troll. I am more inclined to think that Rubio may be a bit younger than he presents himself to be. 1996....that makes him/her 15 or so. That explains a lot about why he is needing such direction.

As an incoming sophomore, Rubio, you should be worrying about doing well in your classes, and finding one or two things that you really LOVE doing. Don't worry, as others have said, about what it looks like on paper.

Now, go enjoy your summer. Stay out of trouble and be ready to get A's in all your classes when school resumes. The rest will sort itself out.
