I think you would get the best answer from his FFR or MALO.

Doing well in a full BS course load, such as Calculus, Chemistry, History and English. Doing well means all As.

I am guessing that Rutgers is just as hard as NC State and the phrase "a straight A report card is difficult to get" is a gross understatement. It doesnt mean i am not going to try though

I am also re-applying as an ROTC freshman. My best advice would be to talk to your FFR or MALO about what kept him from gaining his appointment the first time and work on that specifically. I've heard that activities and leadership are less important than grades since they understand you've just started college. Doing well in ROTC is important too as I believe they have to do a recommendation for you in some capacity. Good luck and hopefully we'll all be at Beast this time next year!

One other thing, as difficult as it can be to get good grades at your respective universities, West Point still expects them. What I was told was that if you can't do well without all the additional time demands of West Point, they believe you will struggle as a cadet regardless of the difficulty of your school.

No partying for this guy. Just ROTC, studying, and more studying, and maybe an intramural sport here and there

Talking to his ROTC instructors to apply for the ROTC nomination.

He could wear his ROTC uniform to the nomination interviews.

Indeed, dress for success.

And remind him... A party might give you a good memory to remember for a week or two.

Your Alma Mater will give you a good memory to remember for a lifetime or two.

Re-Applying:

The 2 things that matter more than anything else when re-applying are:
1) your college grades
2) Improving SAT/ACT scores

What to do:
- Take Calculus, History, Chemistry W/Lab and English
- Earn A's
- Retake and improve SAT/ACT scores
- Get 2 SOEs from college profs (get to know them!)
- Send in your 1st semester transcript as soon as it is available. WP will not evaluate your file until they receive your college transcript
- Consider AROTC
- Complete file early (except for the college 1st semester transcript).
- Apply to all nominations that you are qualified for
- Prepare for and re-take the CFA
- DoDMERB exam is good for 2 years unless there is a change in your medical status

Remember:
- you are building on your high school file - not starting over
- many cadets in each class were not direct admits - most did something between high school and WP (USMAPS, Civil Prep, college, enlisted)
- show improvement in your file or you may get the same outcome as last year
