My son has been in his NROTC unit 2 years as a College Programmer (CP). He and 2 other midshipmen there are waiting to be notified whether they will be offered Advanced Standing and be able to continue in NROTC. I understand there is a Navy Training board that decides sometime in July. I had read somewhere that there maybe only 75-100 Advanced Standing slots available for the 49 or so NROTC units around the country! If the Class of 2013 NROTC CP are not offered Advanced Standing - it is my understanding they will be disenrolled. I don't want to think about that consequence. My son's unit already lost a Mechanical Engineering student because she couldn't stay in school without a NROTC scholarship.

My son has tried very hard to be become an officer in the U.S. Navy. I believe his choice of college major may have hurt his chances, but I have been told by officers that shouldn't matter. He has worked on gaining admission through his applications - with the myriad of paperwork, interviews, references, tests and essays since his junior year of high school. It started off by not getting a slot for the USNA Summer Session; he received a nomination to the USNA from our Congressman but didn't receive an appointment offered. He wasn't offered NAPS, he competed for NROTC scholarship and got accepted to all 5 colleges that had NROTC units - no luck. He joined the unit as a CP and was told that scholarships and/or advanced standing were going to happen to all CP. He took the year of physics and a year of calculus (not required for CP) in hopes of getting a 3 or 2 year NROTC scholarship - no luck; funding I understand. He was nominated for a NROTC scholarship by his unit commanding officer - no money available. He has earned several ribbons - for academics and sports and a Military Order of the World Wars medal as a midshipman. I believe he is a good leader and will make an good naval officer like his grandfather and 2 great grandfathers - if the U.S. Navy makes the right choice.

I am hoping that some one on this forum may have heard the status of NROTC Advanced Standing for individuals like my son (Class of 2013). Thanks for any assistance you may offer.

I feel your pain, my son is also a CP but class of 2014. Your mid could be ranked 1st in his year but asked to disenroll if he does not get a scholarship or advanced standing. I have not heard yet how many will be awarded or how many are applying for these but class of 2013 is the tightest. There were 4 sideload scholarships awarded in the entire country to class of 2013 but all were for LREC. For class of 2014 there are 14 2 1/2 yr and 22 2 yr scholaships available. If our sons are disenrolled there is the possibility of OCS or switching to marines and do the PLC. Other posters say if they truly want to be officers in the navy there is a way so persevere. I think we are running out of options.

If you son has top grades and scores, he should speak to his Captain about the PNS Scholarship... my son was able to gain a 3 year scholarship after one year as a programmer.

Ivydad,
Can you please explain what the PNS scholarship is?
TIA-

I believe you are referring to a Tweeddale Scholarship
•Each unit Professor of Naval Science (PNS) is assigned two Tweeddale Scholarships each year
•Program focused on students majoring in specific technical fields

Criteria for selection:
•Student must have completed at least one but no more than four academic terms w/ a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) which places student above peer mean or 3.0, whichever is higher
•Transcript must reflect grade of "C" or better in all courses attempted
•Student must have completed one academic term of college level math or science
•Will be required to complete Naval Science Course 101 as soon as possible
•Students interviewed by PNS and must comply w/ standards regarding leadership potential and military/physical fitness
•Submit a revised degree plan for review by PNS; degree plan must be verified by student's faculty advisor and demonstrate that student will by able to complete all naval science requirements and still graduate on time with his/her assigned class year group.
•Major in: Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science, Chemistry, Physics
•Strong math/science background in high school and "B" or better in calculus, if completed

Unfortunately, my son is not majoring in a technical field.

Regrettably, I think you have identified the source of the difficulties all the way back to Summer Session. Non-techies are rare in NROTC (15% is the cap for scholarships the past two award seasons), and I am guessing that CPers going Advanced or getting 2, 2.5 or 3 year in-college scholarship awards would have an even smaller ratio -- <10%. I say regrettably because it is not possible for a midshipman to change to a technical major at this late stage... spring semester of freshman year is stretching it, but after that it is almost impossible to graduate in 4 years going from BA prerequisites to BS prerequisites + degree program.

My son received wonderful news today; he was selected for NROTC Advanced Standing! Thanks to all who responded to my thread - hope other Class of 2013 NROTC College Programmers received good news as well.

jcarring- wonderful new and congratulations. Good to see that hard work and dedication has paid off with the budget constraints. A 2013 CP in my sons unit was asked to dissenroll this year, they said he had virtually no chance of advanced standing having a 2.7gpa and tier 3 major. My son has a 3.8gpa and math major so hopefully good news coming in the way of scholarship or advanced standing.
