For those considering the academy and a career in the Coast Guard, I would highly recommend visiting the Coast Guard Festival in Grand Haven, Michigan August 1-August 6. The Coast Guard Cutters Mackinaw, Katmai Bay, Biscayne Bay, and Alder will all be available to tour every day starting Monday August 1 through Saturday August 6. Here is your chance to talk to the officers and crew of cutters out in the fleet. In addition, many third and first-class Cadets will be serving their summer duty on these cutters and you may have an opportunity to talk to them about the academy.

On Saturday August 6 the ships will be open for tours from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM, 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM and 6:00 PM- 8:00 PM. There is a carnival and music stage, and on Saturday at 11:45 AM is the Grand Parade which runs for 2-hours! After dark on Saturday is a huge fireworks display.

That sounds fine to have a Coast Guard Event in Michigan, but please do not call it a Midwest Event. I think it would be better titled "Northern Coast Guard Event." A Midwest Event should be located in Kansas, Arkansas, Missouri, etc.

No disrespect to our friends in Arkansas but . . .

"The Midwestern United States is one of the four U.S. geographic regions defined by the United States Census Bureau, providing an official definition of the American Midwest.

The region consists of 12 states in the north-central and north-eastern United States: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin."
