Hello, all. First off I'd like to say I've been trying to find a site such as this for a while now, luckily I stumbled onto this forums:thumb: . Seems like this forum has great members and fantastic information. Anyways - - -

Hi, fellow serviceacademyforums members. My name is Jhun(pronounced June), an upcoming Junior. Living in Maui, HI. I am athletic, I play FootBall, Wrestle and also Judo for my High School. I am, the starting RB on the Varsity team, as well as the starting Strong Safety. I personally like wrestling the most. Recently placed 2nd on my island. I have been placed 5th in the state twice since my Freshmen year. For Judo I am a GreenBelt, placed 1st on my island, and 3rd in states. Besides sports, I challenge myself by taking AP/Honor classes to see if I am able to handle them. I enjoy Chemistry/Physics. I've always wanted to join USNA since the 7th grade. I've been working hard ever since. I believe I have not worked hard enough to achieve my goal. I would like to get to know some of you, sharing some info about the USNA. Thankyou, all.

Hey and welcome! Good luck on your quest for getting into a Service Academy!

(Many people have suggested internships at your congressman's office as a way to help you get a nomination, by the way! Just thought I'd throw this out here.)

Thanks! I'll look into your suggestion!

Where did you hear that, BillSL? I am not aware of folks recommending that.

Hmm. I believe I read this around here, but I have heard from more than one person (candidate or friends of candidates) recommending that. Interestingly, I cannot find any evidence after a quick search, which is weird, but here it goes:

Basically it goes like this: someone asks "What can I do to increase my chances of getting a nomination?"

Answer: "Get to know your MOC." And, in some situations, the answerer specifies "trying getting a Summer Internship".

On my view, that makes sense because in the end you will get your nomination based on, besides your academics and ECs, your personal-self, your character. And what better way to judge it? An internship allows for a higher demonstration of self than an interview does.

IOW: An internship is a chance to show who you are. A better chance than an interview provides, I suspect. I am not suggesting this as a cheap way of getting a nomination - NO WAY. It is just that some people don't do a lot during the Summer. Might as well take the opportunity to learn a bit more how congressional districts work. I personally wish I had the chance to do this.

Evidently, I could be wrong (check signature). But I thought, hey, this makes sense. Perhaps I will tip people about it and, if they are really interested in it, they can have a better look at it.

My cadet never met or was interviewed by any of his MOCs. They all had qualified committees who did the interviewing and selecting. The senator who selected my cadet never contacted him, even after my son received his appointment. Good character and quality credentials have to shine on their own.

The best way to be selected is to be the best candidate. To me, trying to land an internship with a MOC as a means to a nomination sounds like a waste of time. Our congressman has a staff of adults and I doubt a high schooler trying to pad his resume would find a place in his office. Best to spend time being a great athlete, leader, Eagle Scout, Boys' State delegate, and student and impress the MOC committees when you interview. Of course, your mileage may vary and as always, this is just my opinion as a West Point parent.

Didn't mean to hijack your welcome thread, Hoalike! Welcome to the forums; you will learn a lot here. Hawaii is the most beautiful place I have ever been with the nicest, friendliest people in the world. Wish I could visit again!

Sorry as well, Hoalike. Didn't mean to do this ;)

Just follow Dixieland's suggestion! A parent always knows more than the candidate ;)

 It's all good, Dixieland and BillSL. I could already tell that this site is full of useful information and friendly members!
