I am new to Service Academy Forums and, as I'm sure many other people have asked, was wondering what are my weak points in applying to USCGA. Here is some information that I think is relevant to Admissions. Please let me know if you need any other info.I am going to be a Junior in highschool next year. I am taking all honors and Advanced Placement classes( except one regular but it is an elective and my school did not offer any AP or honors classes in that elective category). I have a 3.52 Unweighted GPA and a 3.79 Weighted GPA. I was in Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts since the first grade until last year( the troop I was in dissolved due to Adult leadership). I have swam competitvely for 13 years for 5 swim teams, played football for 3 years, and baseball for 1 year. I am currently a NHS member and I am the Student Director for the Peer Tutoring Program( I have increased participation in the program by almost 4x and I can get recommendation showing this. I am an ARC Lifeguard and plan on becoming an ARC Lifeguard Instructor. I'm taking pre-cal and Cal 1 next year. My ACT composite score is 28. My Math was 25, Science 24, English 31 and Reading was 29. If anyone could please tell me any areas I am weak in and need to improve that would be great.

Thank You

I think you're on the right track for academics. Your ACT composite is good, but try harder to improve the math score, since that is weighed heavier than the english (or reading?)
For sports, try to become a team captain for your teams if possible. I noticed you used past tense for the sports. You still do those sports, right?
Other than those, everything looks fine. Make sure you stay out of trouble, that's really important.
And sign up for AIM when you get the chance. Good luck!

I still swim. As for the ACT, I haven't taken Cal yet and I heard that it helps alot on the math portion, so hopefully I can atleast get a 31.

The ACT math portion only goes up to trig, I'm not sure if Cal will help or not, but the pre-cal/trig certainly will! Even then, there are only four trig questions on the math portion, so if you really want improvement, you should look towards studying geometry and algebra 2.

I flunked the AP BC Cal exam (cockiness on my part for taking that class, left with a mediocre B) but made 35's twice on ACT math. Focus on the trig; I don't recall any Pre-Cal concepts minus the formula of a circle, law of sines, and law of cosines. You do not need to memorize any of these 3, but be able to recognize them.

Gulfcoaststorm,

I just returned from the second session of 2011 AIM and I believe you are a great candidate and are right on track in terms of academics, leadership and athletics. Here are some USCGA statistics. The average GPA is 3.8, the avg ACT score applicant has is 28-29, but also of great importance the USCGA wants to know if YOU and USCGA are a "good fit". What I learned in 6 days of AIM was "WHY" did I want to go to the USCGA or any military academy?! It has to be the devotion and dedication to serve your country. They will ask you to ask yourself what problem or "cause" in this world are you willing to fight for or defend. AIM was by far the greatest experience I have had. The Cadre will "push" you beyond anything you can imagine but only to make you better! Make sure you apply for AIM (admission information mission) that right before your Senior year in high school and be READY to work! Good Luck!

Sounds like you had a great experience. AIM can give you an insight to the daily life of a cadet/swab that you will not get during a day visit. Success at AIM is a great indicator of success at the academy.

The application for AIM 2012 will open in February and is due April 1.

One slight correction though - AIM stands for Academy Introduction Mission.

IMHO it's not about the "number of service hours," but the quality and consistency of performing service. These experiences should show a growth in volunteerism; beginning as a volunteer and working your way up to being in charge or organizing a volunteer project.
Volunteering is to give unselfishly of your time and make a difference in someones life, improve your community or help those who are in need. You should show a record of volunteer service that identifies this commitment from your Freshman through Senior years in high school.
