My BF is in currently in his plebe year at USNA, and I keep reading that after this year he"ll have ship assignments (excuse me if I'm using the wrong phrase) as soon as the academic year is over. Meaning his summer will be cut short and he'll be out at sea for a couple of weeks? i just want to know how true this might or might not be.

Thanks :)

Kind of true. Summer is broken up into 3 training blocks, each 3-4 weeks long. Training blocks are spent in various places. Some are onboard ships, subs, sailboats, YP boats. Some mids spend time on the Yard doing various thngs. Most mids have one block of leave each summer. They will not know their schedules until late in the spring. They can, however, request a training schedule, but it is only a request. The needs of the Navy come first now.

Thank you so much :) I just one other question so are they randomly assigned to each task or is it something they choose because that is something they are interested in doing in the future?

It's a combination. After Plebe (4/C) year, "most" Mids spend one training block on a Navy ship or submarine. That assignment is pretty random (they can request a specific block of time, and every once in a while, someone gets what they request!). For their other block they can put in requests for the things usna2012mom listed.

After their second (3/C) year, "all" rising 2/C Mids participate in PROTRAMID, which stands for Professional Training of/for Midshipmen. They spend almost a week each with a surface ship, an aviation unit, a submarine, and the Marines. They have lots of choices of things to apply for as the 2nd training block.

After their third (23/C) year, "all" rising 1/C Mids "Firsties" participate in a training block with the area of the service they're strongly interested in joining (surface, aviation, subs, Marines). Again, they have lots of choices of things to request for the second block, including being "detailers" for Plebe Summer.

Thank you so much for the help, all of us back home really want to know what he's going to be doing during his years there and this really helps us understand some of the things he will be experiencing and all of the choices of jobs he will have.:)

One of the things USNA does extremely well is expose Mid's to info re: career options. In addition to these summer outings, there are briefs/lectures on various specialties, and about half the instructors are military people who seem happy to address questions re: their own experiences.
