Does anyone know when Band Co is scheduled to get air conditioning???

Your guess is as good as anybody's - they are in good company because most regimental officers are in a dorm with no A/C as well. Use of fans works very well.

We've had a break from the unmerciful heat tonight so that should give everyone a respite from the oppressive weather conditions of the last several days.

Many of us old timers lasted four years without AC. . . . It IS possible. I remember finally getting fan privileges in November. Very handy, that.

What I was really wondering is there must be an "Improvement" schedule, and if Band Co. (Cleveland Hall) is the last to have Air Conditioning installed, it must be on a schedule to have renovations completed..... They wouldn't make renovations to the other halls and not have plans to complete ALL the dorms.....right?????

Am I officially an old timer now? I mean, I did graduate last century.

I chuckled just seeing the title of the thread. I can remember in indoc, I knew when we were really in trouble. Standing in formation in the passageway in rain gear listening to the hall fan wind down. Not fun.

First thing I did after one IICE class was turn one of my two window fans around to get some cross-flow scavenging going. There was one firstclassman who lived down one of the wings in Palmer that had the scuttlebutt right outside his door. He ran some hose to his fan and made his own A/C.

When I think about those first nights during Indoc, in my rack, trying to get cool enough to sleep in the heat and humidity, knowing that reveille was just about to come up . . . . .

Plebe Beats in the heat and humidity. The smell of fear, sweat and new khakis. . . . . .

Special times, to be sure.

"Back in the day" deep in the bowels of the city where you had hot, sticky, bugs buzzing around your ear kind of nights, you get a huge ice cube, like a gallon size, put it in a pan in front of the fan and viola.....we called it Polish a/c but it worked. no offense to anyone.

Gee, I remember doing that when I was a kid in south TX. close to the border. I also remember walking on the streets, burning hot, barefooted.

Wow! I'd never thought of most of these great ideas! I usually put cold wet towels on me and drink ice water.

Seriously? Your son/daughter will be fine. I'm sure there are more important things going on in your life (I hope) than having to worry about air conditioning at your child's school. This isn't the Hanoi Hilton we are talking about. Time to back off and let your little one grow up.

Kpaviator let me take a guess, you are not a mom are you? Just wait a few months and we will be worried about the heating system, lol. It is what we do  we all agree air conditioning is a low priority, however it is a legit question. Besides, we finally have gotten these kids there, what else that is out of control can we worry about? It's a mom thing. The tone of your post sounded exactly like my husband. :shake: My DS is in an air-conditioned barrack ( or dorm or whatever it is called ) and I am glad. :thumb:

That's the spirit! Making a student live without air conditioning as they are trying to sleep is a sure way to make them grow up! I know - to make it fair let's cut off the AC in the rest of the dorms so they all have to grow up together! Classrooms too! You know it's bad when your kid who grew up in Texas is complaining about the heat in his room at night.

My DS has been home most of the summer and has been looking at pictures of his sister who has just about completed Basic Cadet Training at the USAFA. He could not believe the facilities, equipment and supplies that were being issued to the 1100 kids in her class. How many are in the plebe class this year?

My DS (2012) will not be able to take advantage of it but it is way past time to see some more improvements at KP!

Deal with it

Thousands went through KP with no A/C. A/C is a recent improvement, they will get to Band Company eventually. Campus is on the waterfront, really high temps (above 90) are rare, only a few days a year. some years not at all. Be sure your DD/DS has a fan.

Mothers, you just got to love 'em. Our son went through all four years at KP without A/C (and with no hope of having any) and survived quite well. The fact that some midshipmen now have A/C and that all will have A/C one of these days is a good thing. Patience, Mom, patience. Your son/daughter will survive just fine. I know for a fact that they will as I went through basic training in Kansas in the summer many years ago with A/C and my kid made it through KP without A/C. Amazing how one can adjust. Hang in their Mom and all will be fine. A/C is coming to the Band Company...eventually. I know..."It's not fair".

Bottom line here is, of course, money. KP seems to always get the short end of the stick when it comes to funds for facilities and academy improvements. That's the KP way of life. One thing that could improve upon that is for alumni, parents and friends of KP to start donating to the Foundation in greater amounts. Many KP grads are financially very capable of giving back, and many do, but many choose, for whatever reason, to not give and that hurts everyone associated with KP...even the current midshipmen. Think about it, and while you are at it, write your congressmen and senators and encourage them to support KP with increased appropriation levels.

Comparing anyone's creature comfort to the Chair Force will always leave you feeling like you got the short end of the stick. They are known to build their bases around their golf courses. They are the most lax of the services in my experience.

My DS could not believe that my DD was actually SMILING in pictures from cadet basic training... He said that would not happen in Indoc.

DS son would, of course love AC but is dealing with it. I think he actually enjoys the fact that the Band Company is living without it.

Didn't get to play any golf but had great fun scrambling around during rocket attacks.

Lack of AC

I do hope that when the dreaded 2nd trimester kicks in, everyone will agree that a lack of AC for band company will be about the least of the plebes' concerns. Our DS is in band company, and doesn't seen too unhappy about the dorm! Right now he is at sea (B-splitter) and is enjoying Central America; its cooler than the last gig in the Middle East. As he put it to me, its all a matter of perspective but in the engine room, its always hot.

Of course, it would be nice if all the dorms were upgraded. It would be nice if the docks were safe to walk on in all places, equipment was updated and the food at Delano wasn't so "interesting". Sadly, miracles often have to come one at a time and in small measures. It appears that the administration is trying to get the money that has been lacking; some dorms have been upgraded, some repairs have been made and the square, well, trust me, its better than when I first saw it in the spring of 2008.

I hope the administration can continue to get funds to make these repairs. I think most of us realize that serious money has to poured in just to get back to scratch. I am more or less in charge of a small department and lab at a SUNY school; I feel like half my time is being a professor, the other half of my time is spent being a prostitute (and an ugly one at that) getting companies to donate or sell at cost to keep all of our equipment running. I guess I have a greater tolerance for things like a lack of AC when I know how hard it is to get funding for the bare necessities.

I agree with you. The USMMA is way behind the other 4 academies not only in facilities, but in monthly stipends, health insurance, care of facilities, and activities for students. I work in property management and the first time I saw the exterior of the academy it looked like a property that was in bankruptcy. I'm not blaming this on the current administration. I believe/hope that Admiral Greene is going to bring USMMA to the same standards as the other 4 academies. Unfortunately I think it will take several years to do it. I hope someday the USMMA can be on the same par as everyone else.
